Open-world games are incredibly popular because they offer huge, immersive worlds and compelling characters. The main downside, though, is that it often takes a while to get your bearings and truly start enjoying everything they have to offer, as there’s so much to see and do.
Many open-world games gradually draw you into their worlds, but these games immediately captivate you. Within the first 10 minutes of playing, they make a strong impression and leave you eager to explore further. In fact, I knew these games would be exceptional based on those initial moments.
Ghost of Tsushima
An Epic Display of Samurai Charging with Honor to Meet Their Invaders (and Their End)
The game Ghost of Tsushima begins with a brutal Mongol invasion of Tsushima Island. Samurai warriors attempt to defend their homeland with swords, but are quickly overwhelmed. As Jin Sakai witnesses the massacre of his comrades, his determination to defeat the Mongol leader becomes his driving force.
Even when facing defeat, Jin relentlessly fights on. This struggle is powerfully portrayed, highlighting both the massive scale of the war and the terrifying power of the Mongol Empire. Despite being overwhelmed, players quickly understand why Jin can’t give up – the island of Tsushima is a beautiful and expansive land worth fighting for, a place to regain strength and reclaim what was lost.
Batman: Arkham City
Batman Must Uncover the Truth Behind Protocol 10 in a City Ran By Villains
After Arkham Asylum was destroyed and powerful figures interfered, Gotham’s most dangerous criminals were moved to a new area called Arkham City, built within the ruins of Old Gotham. This essentially gives Batman’s enemies control of an entire city, creating a dangerous situation. Things become personal when Hugo Strange captures Bruce Wayne and imprisons him within Arkham City, revealing that Strange knows Batman’s secret identity. Batman is now racing against time, not only to rescue himself but also to uncover the meaning of a mysterious plan called Protocol 10.
The game begins with a stunning 10-minute introduction to the story. After Batman gets ready at ACE Chemicals, players truly experience his power and get a glimpse of the massive world of Arkham City. Improved fighting and the ability to glide make the action and exploration feel completely new and exciting compared to the previous game.
Cyberpunk 2077
An Action-Packed Welcome to Night City
Once you’ve created your character and chosen a background – Nomad, Corpo, or Street Kid – you’ll begin V’s journey. The opening moments vary depending on your choice – you might be fired from Arasaka, operating as a lone Nomad, or trying to get by in Heywood – but a couple of things are always the same: you’ll meet Jackie Welles, and you’ll be driven to become a legend in Night City.
Within the first ten minutes of playing Cyberpunk 2077, you’ll quickly find yourself captivated by Night City’s vibrant neon lights and the promise of making a name for yourself. The city is a thrilling, but dangerous, place filled with both powerful corporations and ruthless gangs. The game immediately immerses you in this world, and that’s all before you even encounter the famous rebel, Johnny Silverhand. Night City is waiting for newcomers, but be prepared – it’s a place where danger lurks around every corner.
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
The Emperor Slain, An Urgent Quest, and All of Tamriel to Explore
You begin your journey in an Imperial City prison, awaiting execution. But a surprising turn of events unfolds when Emperor Uriel Septim and his guards appear in your cell, revealing a hidden passage. The Emperor personally asks for your help, giving you a chance to start a new life and solve a major mystery in Cyrodiil. Your task: deliver the Amulet of Kings, locate the lost heir to the throne, and prevent the forces of Oblivion from breaking through. However, the choice is yours – you can follow the Emperor’s request or forge your own path.
After escaping the dungeons below the Imperial City, you emerge into a bright, vibrant world filled with lush forests and a powerful feeling of connection to the vast realm of Tamriel. Oblivion immediately captivates you, and once you begin exploring its open world, your adventure will be unlike anyone else’s.
Grand Theft Auto 5
A Cold Heist Gone Wrong Leads to the Vibrancy of a Fresh Los Santos
Okay, so right from the start of Grand Theft Auto 5, the game throws you right into the action – a bank robbery! Honestly, it’s a pretty classic setup, but things get interesting fast. It turns out the whole heist is a fake, designed to let Michael disappear and escape his crazy buddy Trevor. It’s all about starting over in this fresh, updated version of Los Santos, and it’s a really cool way to kick things off.
After a brief introduction, players step into the shoes of Franklin Clinton, a young man trying to find his place in a city that feels indifferent. Grand Theft Auto 5 quickly draws you in with its vibrant world, incredibly fun driving and shooting, and a unique story told through three main characters who frequently switch perspectives and work together on daring heists.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Search for Yennefer Includes a Battle with Ghouls and Rising Tension with Humans
The stunning opening cinematic for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt hints at the game’s epic scope and fantastical world, and that promise holds true when you start playing as Geralt. Even if you’re new to the series, The Witcher 3 quickly immerses you in a compelling story. Geralt teams up with his mentor, Vesemir, to find Yennefer, a powerful sorceress, and together they search for Geralt’s daughter, determined to protect her from falling into the wrong hands.
Playing as Geralt in The Witcher 3 immediately highlights how enjoyable the game is. The initial fight with ghouls demonstrates the game’s combat, while the reactions of the townspeople – their fear of outsiders and witchers – create a believable and immersive world. From the first major quest involving a griffin to your first game of Gwent, The Witcher 3 quickly grabs your attention and makes it hard to stop playing. The game’s world, ravaged by war and filled with monsters, offers an adventure that’s about much more than just earning money – it’s a compelling story that draws you in.
Elden Ring
Escaping a Dangerous Dungeon Reveals the Lush Freedom of Limgrave
FromSoftware consistently delivers immersive and well-designed games, so it was likely Elden Ring would succeed when they combined their signature challenging gameplay with an open-world format. Players are immediately thrust into the game upon character creation, left to explore and progress without much direction – and that’s precisely the experience fans expect from FromSoftware as they strive to create their own unique stories.
No matter how you start – whether you struggle with the initial boss or delve into hidden areas – you’ll eventually find yourself in the vast, open world of Limgrave. From there, you’re free to explore at your own pace, talk to the characters you choose, and fight to collect Runes to improve your character. Elden Ring takes the gameplay known from the Dark Souls series and expands on it significantly, offering incredible boss battles, thoughtfully placed enemies, and a huge world to discover, all without interrupting the experience with lengthy tutorials.
Fallout 4
Witness the Morning of the Great War, the Horrors of Vault-Tec, and the Quest to Find Your Son
All Fallout games put players in a chaotic, post-nuclear world, but Fallout 4 starts by showing a snapshot of normal American life in 2077. The game beautifully portrays the love between your character, their spouse, and their baby, Shaun – but this peaceful existence is quickly shattered. Just ten minutes in, nuclear war erupts, and you’re forced to rush to Vault 101 for safety, witnessing the destruction of Boston as you go underground.
The chilling air holds the weight of a lost world, a civilization destroyed by its own making. The horror is relentless, even as you’re frozen in time, forced to watch the brutal murder of your partner and the abduction of your child. Centuries later, you awaken to a vibrant but broken world – a landscape of ruins and faded colors. This post-war Commonwealth offers a chance to forge a new identity amidst the wreckage.
Red Dead Redemption 2
By 1899, the Age of Outlaws and Gunslingers Was At An End…
From the very beginning of Red Dead Redemption 2, a feeling of intense coldness permeates the experience. This isn’t just about the snowy setting of 1899, but is conveyed through the music, the introductory scenes, and a powerful blizzard that forces the Van der Linde gang to retreat into the mountains after a failed heist. The sound design creates a sense of desperation, and combined with impressive visuals and acting, it immediately draws you into a mysterious story and hints at events that happened before the game begins.
Though some players find the Colter part of Chapter 1 slow, everyone agrees the first fight with the O’Driscolls is amazing. The intense gun battle, the burning house, and the incredible music all within the first ten minutes clearly signal that a truly memorable western adventure is about to begin.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Become the Light That Shines Upon Hyrule Once Again By Going Where You Please
The game begins with the player regaining consciousness in a mysterious, ancient temple after resting in a restorative pool. Almost immediately, they obtain a powerful device called the Sheikah Slate and quickly learn the basic controls while exploring the temple. Soon after, they emerge into the vast world of Hyrule, ready to begin an unforgettable adventure.
Stepping out of the temple feels incredible – a mix of awe, curiosity, and happiness. The soaring music and beautiful sights really highlight the world’s splendor. As the title appears, the camera pulls back to reveal the sheer size of this Hyrule. While you might sometimes feel lost, gentle hints will guide you on an unforgettable and perilous adventure.
