Open-World Games Where The Player Is Feared by Everyone

Open-world games often begin by dropping players into a new world with no backstory, identity, or special abilities, forcing them to build their journey from the ground up. These worlds are frequently filled with powerful enemies, creating a constant sense of tension and challenge. Lately, many games are pushing the difficulty even further, borrowing the feeling of vulnerability common in horror games – a trend that gained significant traction after the massive popularity of Elden Ring.

Many open-world games make you feel powerful, letting you strike fear into enemies simply by appearing. This can be through your character’s history, reputation, incredible abilities, or other unique qualities. We’re taking a look at open-world games where the main character is genuinely feared, and exploring how that fear impacts the gameplay and makes each title stand out.

Prototype

Enemies Hunt the Unstoppable Mutant, Knowing They’ll Lose

When I think of games like this, the open-world series Prototype immediately comes to mind. It’s really enjoyable playing as a powerful mutant in a world after a disaster. Even though your character, Alex Mercer, is hunted by everyone, the game makes you feel like the soldiers know they can’t win. Mercer can easily defeat large groups of enemies using only his hands, and he gains even more incredible powers as you play. He can even absorb other people, taking their appearance to help with stealth missions.

But these moments are brief diversions from the game’s exciting core: causing massive destruction. It’s incredibly satisfying to watch Mercer effortlessly defeat waves of Gentek soldiers, vehicles, tanks, and helicopters sent to stop him. It really makes you wonder who the real threat is.

Ghost of Tsushima

Is There Really a Vengeful Spirit Protecting the Island?

Like many great open-world adventure games, Ghost of Tsushima begins with a familiar story: a respected hero suddenly loses everything. But the game adds a clever twist: as Jin Sakai fights to save his home and becomes a legendary figure, the Mongol invaders begin to fear him, changing the dynamic of the conflict. His growing reputation actually impacts how enemies behave.

As Jin Sakai embraces his identity as the “Ghost” in Ghost of Tsushima, he gains access to deadly new tactics, like using poison to quickly eliminate large groups of enemies and a powerful new combat stance. This dramatically shifts the power dynamic, allowing him to defeat most foes with a single strike. The Mongols become terrified of the Ghost’s reputation, often fleeing the battlefield. This creates a powerful feeling of being an unstoppable force. The upcoming sequel, Ghost of Yotei, aims to recreate this sense of fear in the late game, with the protagonist Atsu forming a bond with wolves. This alliance will confuse and frighten enemies and bounty hunters, often causing them to surrender immediately.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Geralt Is a Mutant Freak Equally Despised and Dreaded

Following the previous Witcher games where Geralt of Rivia had amnesia, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt sees him recover his memories – including his dark reputation as the “Butcher of Blaviken.” As Geralt travels through a land ravaged by war, ordinary people – villagers, farmers, and guards – both fear and revile him, often hurling insults like “freak” at him. This highlights the prejudice against witchers, who are seen as unnatural outsiders, and the animosity Geralt encounters. However, despite this hostility, few would risk challenging him to a duel, knowing they’d likely lose.

The game features many moments where characters react to Geralt with fear and distrust, often running away at the sight of his distinctive appearance. It’s curious that this fear isn’t consistently reflected in typical gameplay; common bandits don’t seem to recognize or fear a powerful, well-equipped witcher, and immediately attack. This leads to many humorous and well-known moments that fans have turned into memes.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War

Dark Lord, Bright Lord — Same Thing Really

In Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, the relationship between Talion and Celebrimbor grew over time as they built a reputation. However, Shadow of War begins with Talion and Celebrimbor, now known as the Bright Lord, already being feared throughout Mordor. He’s even more powerful thanks to a new Ring of Power, giving him incredible abilities and the power to sway anyone to his side. The Bright Lord then launches a full-scale war against Sauron’s army, defeating, and recruiting Sauron’s strongest commanders to fight with him.

The Nemesis system is what truly makes this game special. It builds unique relationships and rivalries for each player, based on their history with the orc leaders. These leaders might intensely hate Talion, constantly pursue him, or become broken and fearful, existing only at the player’s whim. Combined with the grand scale and high stakes of Middle-earth: Shadow of War, which lets you confront the Dark Lord himself, this game offers an unparalleled open-world experience.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Notorious Misthios of Leonidas’ Bloodline

The Assassin’s Creed games usually let you rise from obscurity to become a legendary Hidden One, playing a key role in a centuries-long struggle. But Assassin’s Creed Odyssey starts differently. Your character and their sibling are direct descendants of the famous King Leonidas I, who himself came from an ancient, powerful race known as the Isu. Whether you play as Kassandra or Alexios, you’ll quickly become a renowned mercenary, striving to live up to your father’s legacy by taking on dangerous missions throughout Greece.

As a huge fan of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, I love how powerful you feel when you get Leonidas’ spear! It basically gives you god-like abilities, making you untouchable and striking fear into the Cult of Kosmos. And the mercenary system is brilliant – it’s like Shadow of Mordor’s Nemesis system, but lighter. You can be hunted, or you can do the hunting! It’s similar to the ‘wanted’ system in GTA, where better and better mercenaries come after you if you cause too much trouble. Honestly, though? Those elite mercenaries usually just mean even better loot and a ton of XP, so bring them on!

Batman: Arkham Knight

Fear and Darkness Are Your Allies

Batman relies on his intelligence, skill in the shadows, and ability to inspire fear – and players can fully utilize these strengths in Batman: Arkham Knight. As the peak of his abilities, with all of Gotham under his protection, Bruce Wayne doesn’t need superpowers to terrify his enemies, whether you prefer a stealthy or direct approach. This game is the thrilling finale to the Batman: Arkham series, taking Batman’s gadgets, skills, and combat strategies to the next level so you can conquer even the toughest challenges.

It’s incredibly satisfying to sneak through levels in Batman: Arkham Knight because the enemy AI is programmed to fear Batman. Watching them panic as their allies disappear and frantically search for him, knowing he could be anywhere, is a real highlight. The game fully immerses you in the DC universe, continuing to develop Batman’s complicated relationships with iconic villains and anti-heroes. It really shows how Batman’s years of fighting have made him a legendary figure in Gotham – a name whispered with fear and respect.
