Okay, so usually when I jump into an open-world game, the world is pretty much set from the start. Towns might change a little as the story goes on, but it’s usually because of things I do. It’s rare to find a game where the world actually changes and evolves on its own, without me having to do anything. But there are a few games that really nail that feeling, and I’m about to share some of the best.
Not all changes in games are immediately noticeable, but we can still follow how they develop. Regardless, open-world games deserve recognition for their innovative designs and how they’ve inspired countless others. We can expect to see even more games in the future that build on these ideas.
Death Stranding 2: On The Beach
Asynchronous Multiplayer At Its Best
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach really showcases this concept with its unique multiplayer. Once you start playing, you’re connected to other players, but the way things happen – when things appear or change – feels random and unpredictable.
Players can’t directly communicate or work together, but they can still indirectly influence each other. For example, a shared construction project like building a road could be completed collaboratively. Players might also find lost items and choose to deliver them, or they could hand off their own packages to other players for random delivery.
Middle-earth: Shadow Of Mordor
Your Orc Nemesis
The game Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor features a unique gameplay system called the Nemesis System, which is now owned by Warner Bros. after they closed Monolith Productions, the game’s original developer. This system makes enemies more than just obstacles – when players wound but don’t kill them, those enemies return with scars, increased strength, and a higher rank, potentially leading followers. Players can encounter these returning foes at any time, as they continue to grow in power behind the scenes.
Elden Ring
Beware Of Invaders
As a huge fan, I think what really sets Elden Ring apart isn’t necessarily how big the world is, but how much stuff is crammed into it. It’s also the first time the challenging Souls-like gameplay has been combined with a truly open world, which is amazing. The world feels dynamic, too. Beyond unlocking new areas by beating bosses, the most exciting thing is when another player suddenly invades your game! Sometimes you’ll get a warning, but usually, you just turn around and someone’s attacking you. It keeps you on your toes, even when you’re playing with friends – invaders can show up during co-op, so you always have to be careful!
Donkey Kong Bananza
Mother Earth Repairs
Okay, so I’ve been playing Donkey Kong Bananza, and seriously, it’s one of the most fun open-world games I’ve played all year! It’s not the first game to let you run around a big world, but the way everything breaks is just incredible. Donkey Kong really lets loose with those powerful punches and just demolishes everything in his path – it’s super satisfying!
While players can cause a lot of destruction in the game, the world isn’t permanently ruined. It automatically repairs itself, often when players aren’t even paying attention – like after reloading the game or traveling between areas. This means you can freely experiment with destruction without any lasting consequences.
Ghost Of Yotei
Your Reputation Rises
In Ghost of Yotei, the world reacts to your actions and becomes more challenging as you gain a reputation. As the main character, Atsu, completes jobs and side quests, she becomes well-known, which unfortunately attracts unwanted attention from bandits and rival hunters. This means more enemies will appear in the world, and players should expect frequent ambushes – whether they’re being pursued on horseback or caught in traps.
Red Dead Redemption 2
Get A Load Of That Bounty
Like Ghost of Yotei, Red Dead Redemption 2 uses a bounty system. The more crimes you commit in the Old West setting, the higher your Wanted level will rise. This makes it harder to enter towns and buy things, as people will recognize you and potentially alert the law. However, you don’t have to be a ruthless criminal; you can guide the main character, Arthur Morgan, towards redemption even while remaining part of a gang.
Diablo 4
Look Out For World Events
Diablo 4 introduces a large, open world – a first for the series. Unlike previous games, you can freely explore a vast landscape filled with monsters and interesting locations. Random events also happen throughout the world, bringing tough mini-bosses to certain areas. When these events occur, players can team up online to defeat them together. As you progress, these world events become more common and appear in more places.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
Beware The Blood Moon
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is packed with unexpected discoveries for players, from interesting characters to surprising events. One example is the Blood Moon, a random occurrence that appears in the game and isn’t tied to any specific trigger.
A crimson moon will soon appear, dramatically increasing the strength of all monsters in the game. Players should be cautious during this dangerous event, and may want to temporarily avoid challenging areas until the heightened monster activity subsides.
Minecraft
Property Bros.
What sets Minecraft apart is that each player gets a completely unique world – no two are the same. Players gather resources to craft tools and build anything they can imagine, from simple homes to elaborate villages and monuments. Staying in one area makes it easier to protect your creations, but building across a wider area can be more challenging. At night, monsters appear and try to destroy what players have built, meaning even impressive structures can be damaged or destroyed while players aren’t looking, changing the world around them.
Palworld
Relying On Pals
Palworld is similar to Minecraft, but with a less blocky appearance, and features creatures called Pals that resemble Pokemon. Unlike typical games where creatures only fight, Pals in Palworld can be used as weapons, ridden as mounts, and even put to work building and defending your base. You can assign Pals tasks while you’re away exploring, and they’ll continue working – potentially constructing new buildings or fending off attackers – changing your base in your absence.
