Some players quickly create a character with a single click, while others meticulously craft their appearance for hours, often still feeling unsatisfied. If you’re one of those dedicated creators, you’ve come to the right place – I understand your frustration! There are incredible character creation tools available, and it’s time we shared them instead of keeping them secret.
If you’re searching for a new open-world RPG and want to really personalize your character, you’ve come to the right place. Some games offer incredibly detailed customization options, letting you tweak everything with sliders and colors. Others provide fewer options, but still have attractive choices that are worth exploring. Now, let’s start building your character!
10. Monster Hunter Wilds
These Hunters Are Gorgeous
If you’re new to the Monster Hunter series, Monster Hunter Wilds is a good place to start, even with some recent concerns. One of its strengths is definitely the character creation – you have a lot of control over how your Hunter looks, with plenty of options to customize their face.
The hairstyles are all fantastic, and with the color customization options, you can create almost any look you imagine. Plus, as you progress, you’ll unlock stunning armor sets inspired by each boss. It’s all about expressing your style – fashion is the ultimate goal!
9. Baldur’s Gate 3
Make Your Tav Exactly How You’d Like Them To Be
You’ll likely be captivated by the beautiful character designs in Baldur’s Gate 3, just as I was. The characters are all incredibly polished and visually appealing. While the character creator doesn’t have sliders or fully customizable features – it uses pre-made faces – it’s still excellent. Certain face shapes are also specific to certain races, like High Elves, Humans, and Half-Elves, which adds to the unique look of your character.
It’s fun to create unique characters with all the visual options available, and you can really customize their appearance with the detailed face and body paint. The ability to play as races like Tieflings and Dragonborn is a great bonus! By the third Act, you’ll have plenty of different outfits for your camp, so prepare to take lots of screenshots in Photo Mode.
8. Cyberpunk 2077
Style Is Everything In Night City
Okay, so creating my character, V, in Cyberpunk 2077 is seriously detailed. Everything fits the game’s vibe, and the hairstyles are pretty over-the-top, which I love! But it doesn’t stop there – the makeup options are insane, and you can cover yourself in tattoos. Plus, you can customize all the cyberware and even things like nail length and color. It’s awesome how much control you get!
I especially love customizing the eyes! You can choose from a bunch of unique options, like completely white eyes or even heart-shaped ones. There are also some more mature choices available, but let’s just say there’s plenty to explore. The game’s clothing system has been updated, so what you wear is more about style than protection – cyberware is what provides your armor now. Feel free to experiment and have fun!
7. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim
Old But Gold Bethesda Creator
The character creation in Skyrim still feels great today. With a few mods, it’s almost as detailed as games released recently. Even without any modifications, the game offers a lot of creative freedom. Each race has a unique appearance, making your choice feel important, particularly if you pick one of the non-human options.
In Skyrim, you can play as cat-like Khajiit, one of three distinct types of elves, or as the lizard-like Argonians. The game really shines because of how much customization it offers – you can easily lose hours creating exactly the character you want. And once you start playing, you’ll find a huge variety of armor to choose from, with the Daedric armor being particularly impressive.
6. Starfield
Detailed And Beautiful, In True Bethesda Style
While Starfield didn’t quite reach the level of success everyone expected, one of its strongest points is definitely character creation. It’s a really fun and engaging process, and a big improvement over previous games. Starting in a clean, white studio feels like a fresh start, letting you build your character from scratch – at least, that’s how it feels to me, as someone who enjoys character customization!
I love how much you can customize characters – the detailed sliders and ability to create facial asymmetry really make each one feel unique. Even though the game aims for realism, you can still have fun with things like unusual eye colors, makeup, and tattoos. Plus, there’s a good selection of clothing, and I especially like the Ryujin and Freestar outfits.
5. Fallout 4
The Iconic Character Chreator For The Sole Survivor Still Holds Up
Just one more Bethesda game, then I’m moving on! I have to say, Fallout 4‘s character creator is surprisingly good and doesn’t get enough credit. It’s a massive visual upgrade from Skyrim, and I really liked the sculpting feature. It felt similar to The Sims 4 – much more intuitive and lets you really shape your character’s face.
I often struggle to understand what specific facial features – like the “inner upper brow corner” – actually are unless they’re clearly shown, so I end up just experimenting with the settings. With Fallout 4, it’s always clear what I’m adjusting. And regarding outfits, please, find the Nuka Girl suit and give it to Paladin Danse – you’ll really enjoy that! But seriously, the game has some wild clothing options. I personally love pairing the red bandanna with the cowboy hat.
4. Dragon Age: Inquisition
BioWare’s Deep Slider System Is Impressive
Like many fantasy role-playing games, Dragon Age: Inquisition lets you create a highly detailed character. Surprisingly, it actually offers more options for customizing your character’s appearance than Baldur’s Gate 3, thanks to the extensive range of sliders and tools available. You can fine-tune almost every detail, even though it doesn’t have quite as many different races to choose from.
Even with dwarves, elves, and the horned Qunari alongside humans, the game already offers a good mix of characters. And with options like makeup, tattoos, and different skin tones, you can create a truly unique Inquisitor – there’s no limit to what they could look like.
3. Dragon’s Dogma 2
The Huge Slider Options Make Up For Few Races
When it comes to character races in Dragon’s Dogma 2, I appreciate how many choices there are overall, but I do wish we could play as more than just Humans and Beastren. The Beastren designs are really neat and unique – they bring to mind the Khajiit from The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, but in a really enjoyable and creative way.
Okay, seriously, the character creation in this game is insane! There are so many sliders and options – not just for your face, but for literally every part of your body. I spent over an hour just trying to get my character looking exactly how I wanted. Hairstyles, tattoos, adjusting body proportions… honestly, I could have spent all day tweaking things! If you’re a perfectionist like me, be prepared to lose a lot of time in there, but it’s totally worth it.
2. Elden Ring
FromSoftware Wants You To Work On Your Elden Bling
Look, I almost put Elden Ring at number one, honestly. When the game first dropped, the character creations people were posting online were… wild! But it still lands at a solid second place. Seriously, the character customization is incredible. We all saw the Shrek builds and those crazy purple characters people were making, and you can’t beat that level of freedom to create whatever you want.
While the game doesn’t have a huge variety of character races, you can still create a truly unique and otherworldly appearance. Plus, the armor options are fantastic – you’ll find beautiful sets based on the game’s bosses, letting you dress like them, and then there’s the particularly striking Godskin Noble armor.
1. Black Desert Online
It Doesn’t Get More Detailed Than This
I was surprised to learn that Black Desert Online offers more than just incredible character creation! And honestly, you can’t beat how detailed and customizable it is. If you prefer a beautiful, polished look over a rough or realistic style, this game is perfect. Just be aware that some customization options are only available for certain classes, and those classes might be limited to specific genders.
Once you look past a slight learning curve, you’ll be amazed by the incredible level of detail in the character creation tools. It’s far more comprehensive than previous games, and with full body customization, you can create characters inspired by almost anything you can imagine in Black Desert Online.
