Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap: What’s Next After Launch?

After a gap of four years, the Orcs Must Die! series has returned with the launch of Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap. This game offers a four-player cooperative mode, roguelike mechanics, and six new War Mages to the storyline, all while retaining key features from the original OMD! such as third-person perspective and fantasy elements. In addition, Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap reintroduces beloved character Mage Max for player use and Gabriella as a lobby NPC.

Previously in September, Robot Entertainment announced that the character Gabriella would eventually become playable in OMD! Deathtrap after its release. Similar to previous OMD! games, updates for Deathtrap are anticipated following its launch. In a recent chat with Game Rant, game director Kyle Snyder disclosed some insights into the plans for Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap during its initial year.

What Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap Fans Can Look Forward to After Launch

OMD! Deathtrap’s Closest Post-Launch Content

In simpler terms, Snyder has announced that Gabriella will join the playable characters in the game ‘OMD! Deathtrap’ sooner, and she won’t make her appearance on her own. Additionally, a new map named Resort Canal is expected in upcoming updates. As per Snyder, the development team is actively working on numerous exciting additions for the game, including additional traps, characters, and enemies, which will be introduced throughout the first and subsequent years of ‘OMD! Deathtrap’.

Very soon following the launch, you’ll find Gabriella and a fresh map called Resort Canal joining us, along with some delightful unexpected extras. Throughout the year and beyond, we have plans to introduce additional traps, War Mages, opponents, game modes, and maps.

In his discussion, Snyder didn’t go into great detail about when these additions might be available, but he made clear that all maps will be free for everyone playing the game, giving fans peace of mind knowing there will be some free content coming up. Moreover, he mentioned that the team is considering incorporating player suggestions into future updates. The development of Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap heavily relied on player input, with Robot Entertainment conducting numerous playtests prior to release in order to fine-tune aspects like barricades and multiplayer balance. Snyder plans to continue this tradition by involving players more as they experiment with Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap.

Gabriella’s Kit and More New Mages

In addition to Max, Gabriella is one of the prominent characters hailing from the Orcs Must Die! series. She made her appearance in OMD! 2 and has consistently been included in subsequent games. Unlike Max, Gabriella wasn’t playable at launch in Deathtrap, but Snyder hinted that Gabriella’s abilities will showcase “innovative arcane magic and status effects,” elements not found in the base game. This could be a reflection of Deathtrap’s objective to provide each Mage with distinct skills. Lastly, Snyder mentioned that Gabriella is getting a new combat outfit, and he believes her redesign will resonate with fans.

In the upcoming game “OMD! Deathtrap,” Gabriella won’t be the sole War Mage; in fact, the series is introducing another pair of anthropomorphic Mages with bear and cat-like features – Kalos and Sophie. Previously, the last game featuring animal characters in the “Orcs Must Die!” series was “OMD! Unchained.” Snyder was thrilled to reintegrate these War Mages into “Deathtrap,” as he considers Sophie his favorite character so far. During playtests, she also proved to be a fan favorite. With numerous fantasy races at his disposal for character design, Snyder hinted that more anthropomorphic Mages may soon join the roster of “OMD! Deathtrap.

You can anticipate an even wider range of creatures in the future beyond just bears and cats, as we won’t be limiting ourselves to those two.

Snyder hinted that there are more exciting surprises on the horizon, so fans shouldn’t have to wait much longer to discover what the developers have been working on.
