As a gamer with a penchant for Disney classics and a soft spot for underdog games, I find myself utterly captivated by the recent unveiling of the Epic Mickey pitch video. This intriguing peek into an alternate universe of Epic Mickey is like stumbling upon a long-lost treasure in a forgotten corner of my gaming library.
As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled about the upcoming release of Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed. Recently, the initial pitch video for this game has been unearthed and shared online. This is an HD remake of the 2010 original Wii game, originally developed by Purple Lamp and published by THQ Nordic. I can’t wait to dive back into this magical world!
In the initial version of “Epic Mickey,” Mickey Mouse embarks on an adventure through a desolate realm populated by forgotten Disney characters. Upon entering Yen Sid’s workshop, Mickey plays around with a magical paintbrush, unintentionally bringing forth a monstrous creature known as the Blot. As he attempts to rectify his error, Mickey ends up causing more chaos, eventually getting kidnapped and thrust into the wasteland itself. Once there, Mickey must battle against the various creatures spawned by the Blot, wielding the power of a tool that uses both paint and solvent – the magic paintbrush. Although many elements remain consistent in the final game, a recently discovered pitch video reveals alternate paths the story could have taken.
Back in January, I stumbled upon a fascinating video initially shared by Thomas Heimann on DeviantArt. This guy played a key role in shaping the original idea and cinematic pitch for a game we all know as Epic Mickey. Fans like those on the Epic Mickey Wiki Twitter account have kept it alive online.
How Mickey’s Ink Powers Differ in Epic Mickey’s Pitch Video
This video also showcased how Mickey utilized paint as a weapon in this original version, due to the Phantom Blot’s powers mingling with his physiology. Most notably, Mickey uses ink from his own body, rather than a paintbrush like in the final game. Some of these abilities include surfing atop ink, creating ink trampolines, gliding by turning his arms into ink parachutes, using ink to create weapons like a ray gun, and even creating a huge tidal wave of ink, though at the cost of expending his stamina. The video ends with Mickey freeing himself before spraying the screen with ink, the Mad Doctor warning Oswald to run.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve always been intrigued by the lore of Epic Mickey. Previously, we’ve caught glimpses of its original concept and pitch, but now, for the first time online, we get to see the full video, complete with voice acting. Interestingly, I was the one who directed and animated the scene where Mickey takes the plunge down the hole. My fellow animators, Jessie Slate and Mike Boyce, also played significant roles in bringing this vision to life. With Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed due for release soon, this video offers a thrilling peek into what might have been if things had turned out differently.
