As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I hear about Rod Fergusson’s plans for Gears of War 6. Having grown up with Marcus Fenix and his band of brothers, the thought of Kait, Marcus, and the crew venturing off to explore other planets in Sera’s solar system was an exciting prospect that had me on the edge of my seat.
This article contains spoilers for Gears 5
As a devoted fan, I’m sharing some intriguing insights from Rod Fergusson, who used to be the head of Xbox’s The Coalition studio, regarding his intended direction for the sixth mainline entry of the beloved Gears of War series before his departure in 2020. Now, as the boss of the Diablo franchise at Blizzard Entertainment, he’s focusing on nurturing and expanding Diablo 4 for many years to come.
Previously, in June, Xbox delivered what is being hailed as its finest games presentation yet at Summer Game Fest. The event concluded with a visit from The Coalition, who unveiled a cinematic teaser trailer for the forthcoming installment in the Gears of War series, titled Gears of War: E-Day. In an unexpected move, The Coalition has temporarily put aside plans for a sequel to Gears 5, instead choosing to develop a prequel set fourteen years prior to the original Gears of War. This new game will revolve around the relationship between main character Marcus Fenix and beloved figure Dom Santiago in the early stages of the Locust invasion.
In the most recent edition of IGN’s Podcast Unlocked, Rod Fergusson disclosed his storyline ideas for what could have been Gears of War 6. Fergusson revealed that he intended to transport Kait, Marcus, and their companions away from Sera to explore if life could be maintained on a planet within Sera’s solar system. He hinted at the Union of Independent Republics (UIR) technology the characters encountered in Gears 5 as the means for the crew to travel into space, suggesting it would not be a grand space expedition but rather a group of determined humans trying to flee and survive.
Rod Fergusson Wanted To Take Gears of War 6 To A Different Planet
In discussing the finale of “Gears 5,” Fergusson mentioned that they hadn’t decided definitively on whether JD Fenix or Del Walker was saved, preferring instead to let players decide based on their in-game choices. This approach mirrors a decision made by Epic Games for “Gears of War 3,” where fans voted whether Clayton Carmine lived or perished. For “Gears 6,” it’s intriguing to consider that Kait and the team might encounter new threats on an uncharted planet, raising questions about whether the Locust inhabit the core of every planet in Sera’s solar system. This could be a fascinating theory to delve into further.
As we look forward to “Gears of War: E-Day”, there’s a strong chance that we may also get “Gears of War 6” and further developments in Kait Diaz’s story, following the cliffhanger ending of “Gears 5”. It’ll be intriguing to see if the creative concepts for this installment, as envisioned by Fergusson, come to life. In the meantime, fans can anticipate “Gears of War: E-Day”, which is speculated to release in 2025.
