Oshi no Ko Creators Make Surprising Revelation About Their Involvement in the Live-Action Movie

Summary

  • Oshi no Ko live-action was well-received by niche audiences, despite not garnering as much attention as the anime.
  • The original manga creators approved of the adaptation, with Akasaka in particular feeling a great sense of involvement.
  • Despite some reader disappointment, the ending of the Oshi no Ko manga was as the author intended, and the series maintains its own identity.

As a die-hard fan of manga and anime who has spent countless hours immersed in these captivating worlds, I must say that the Oshi no Ko live-action series is a breath of fresh air! While it may not have garnered as much attention as its animated counterpart, it has managed to carve out a niche for itself among those who appreciate well-crafted drama.

The live-action adaptation of “Oshi no Ko” started streaming on Amazon Prime Video last month, and a movie based on this series premiered in Japan on December 20, 2024. However, the worldwide release of this film is yet to be confirmed. Given that it’s a direct continuation of the series with the same production team, it’s likely that we will be able to watch it on Amazon Prime Video eventually.

Although the live-action version hasn’t garnered as much attention as the anime, it has been generally well-liked by specialized audiences. Fans of anime are typically cautious about live-action adaptations, in part due to past negative experiences. However, since Oshi no Ko presents a more realistic, everyday narrative, it is more feasible for transformation into a drama series.

It appears that Mengo Yokoyari and Aka Akasaka, the original creators of the manga, have expressed positive feedback about the movie. Their recent statements, published by the Japanese press, show them praising the film. Interestingly, Yokoyari was not anticipated to play a significant role in the production process, while Akasaka shared that he decided to keep his hands off most of the production.

“Everyone Had a Great Sense of Involvement

Akasaka openly shared that he experienced a deep connection with the entire team, who were committed to creating the series and film. He mentioned having the opportunity to oversee production from the start, and always feeling valued. Although there were instances where the adaptation deviated from the manga, he saw no need to alter it, understanding that live-action is a distinct format. In his view, everyone was putting forth their utmost effort while staying true to the original source material, thereby giving the series its unique character.

Even though I didn’t contribute to the filmmaking process, I was thrilled to see that the messages I intended resonated beautifully within the movie.

Oshi no Ko Manga Recently Ended

The original comic series has ceased publication, yet its conclusion left some readers feeling dissatisfied. Notably, this included fans of “Kaguya-sama: Love is War,” another work by the same author, which also ended in a manner that drew criticism. However, the creator has confirmed that the series concluded as he had planned all along, despite any ensuing debates.

Oshi no Ko live-action series is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
