As I eagerly anticipate the upcoming showdown in Tokyo Blade’s stage play, the tension between Shinjuku and Shibuya factions is palpable. With characters aligning themselves for this grand confrontation, I find myself squaring off against Princess Saya – a reflection of the intense rivalry between Kana and Akane. Unlike Kana, who views this conflict as mere acting, Akane seems to treat it as something far more profound.

In this week’s instalment of “Oshi no Ko”, I found myself deeply engrossed in the intricate bond between Akane and Kana. This time around, we delved into how Kana has significantly shaped Akane’s life journey. For the entire episode, these two captivating characters were front and center, illuminating a crucial milestone in their lives. It was an exceptional episode that I believe will resonate strongly with fans of both Akane and Kana.

Shinjuku Vs. Shibuya

The Two Factions Clash

Oshi no Ko Season 2: Akane And Kana-chan

“Sure enough, actors who’ve been at it their whole lives are a different breed.”

The story picks up directly following the previous installment, with Blade and Tsurugi on a mission to save Kizami after his battle against Monme. Kamoshida, playing Monme, mentions the Shibuya faction for the first time, but a sound effect interrupts, making his statement unclear. To compensate, Kana, portraying Tsurugi, improvises some dialogue to fill in the gaps, earning praise from both Kamoshida and Director Kaburagi. Monme manages to flee, and the scene shifts to Monme reporting back to Touki and Princess Saya. With a crucial decision looming regarding the Shinjuku faction, Princess Saya’s hesitation and determination must be conveyed by Abiko in just a few lines. To everyone’s astonishment, Akane delivers an exceptional performance, perfectly capturing every nuance of Princess Saya’s feelings and internal struggles.

The setting shifts to the confrontation between the Shibuya and Shinjuku gangs. Initially, the Shinjuku gang presents as one massive unit, but their numbers dwindle as fighters opt to engage their adversaries rather than retreat. Kizami squares off against Monme for a second time, while Blade encounters Touki in combat. As the skirmish commences, the scene alters yet again. A solitary figure, Tsurugi, approaches Princess Saya’s quarters and demands a duel. With Akane arriving on the scene, she begins to ponder over old memories.

Akane’s Dream Begins

To One Day Reach Her Idol

Oshi no Ko Season 2: Akane And Kana-chan

“If I could become friends with Kana-chan… I would die of happiness.”

Growing up, Akane found herself captivated by Kana’s acting profession, particularly her ability to convincingly shed tears on cue. Akane’s parents encouraged her to explore acting, though she initially hesitated. It was the prospect of potentially befriending “Kana-chan” that eventually convinced her to give it a try. She dedicated considerable time and effort to honing her craft, finding it challenging but never letting go of her aspiration to meet Kana. In pursuit of this dream, Akane even altered her appearance by changing her hairstyle and acquiring a hat reminiscent of Kana’s.

In the end, during an upcoming audition, Akane unintentionally listens in on a conversation revealing that the audition is merely a formality, and Kana will secure the role regardless of the outcome. When Kana arrives, Akane verifies if this was true, only to learn that Kana not only accepts being pre-selected but considers it common practice for minor roles, as it attracts audiences with a well-known name and acting ability is less important. When Akane continues questioning Kana’s acceptance of the situation, Kana reacts angrily, swatting away Akane’s hat. Despite getting to meet her idol, Akane’s first encounter turned sour, leaving her in tears.

Akane’s True Goal

Acting That Devours Others

Oshi no Ko Season 2: Akane And Kana-chan

“Look, I’ll shine a light on you, so sparkle even more brightly.”

Following their tumultuous encounter with Kana, Akane found herself deeply intrigued by understanding Kana’s actions and words during their meeting. She even delved into psychology to gain insights into Kana’s behavior. Over time, Akane came to understand that Kana too was disgruntled about the biased audition but had little recourse since her work opportunities were dwindling. To remain relevant, Kana followed instructions given by adults, transforming herself from a self-centered performer into someone who supports others. Although Kana seemed content with this change, Akane was not, yearning for Kana to revert back to the days when she was solely focused on outshining everyone else.

To spark a reaction from Kana, Akane plans to deliver an exceptional act, one that emphasizes her radiance amidst numerous other performers showcasing their own talents. Impressed by Akane’s performance, Kana is momentarily swayed to intensify her own acting, but recollections of past trauma surface, causing her to scale back her performance instead, unknowingly dimming Akane’s spotlight. Backstage, Akane contemplates whether she’s made a misstep, but Aqua soon appears and encourages her that they can both share the limelight together.
