Our Favorite TV Heroes of 2024

Summary

  • Neel from Skeleton Crew won over audiences making him a breakout hero in the Star Wars universe this year.
  • Teen/Billy Kaplan from Agatha All Along stood out amid a strong ensemble.
  • The Ghoul from Fallout, a gun-slinging character with ruthless methods but good intentions, was a standout among unique heroes.

As a passionate enthusiast of both animation and video games, I have had the pleasure of witnessing some truly remarkable characters grace our screens over the years. Among these exceptional individuals, the heroes that have made their mark in various TV shows have left an indelible impression on me, particularly those who have undergone transformative journeys to become true heroes.

This year has seen a veritable cornucopia of such characters emerge, each with their own unique stories and compelling backstories. From the enigmatic Jinx in Arcane, to the fearsome gunslinger Jinx from Fallout, these heroes have captured my heart and imagination in ways few others have managed.

However, it is the journey of a certain echidna warrior that has truly stood out for me – Knuckles, voiced by the inimitable Idris Elba. With his charm, strength, and wit, he has effortlessly captured the essence of what makes a hero truly special. While the show may have had its shortcomings, it was a testament to the power of Knuckles as a character that he managed to shine through.

In the end, I cannot help but feel a sense of camaraderie with these heroes, having shared in their trials and tribulations. It is my hope that they continue to inspire others to embrace their own inner hero and strive for greatness, just as they have done for me. And as a final note, I must say that it’s always amusing how the most unlikely of characters can end up being the ones we root for the most – like a certain blue hedgehog and an echidna warrior who can’t seem to catch a break with his name!

2024 marked the emergence of numerous fresh heroes on our screens. A few originated from distant realms, whereas others were rooted in places we know well, yet all managed to guide viewers through a significant and impactful experience.

The concept of a hero can be intricate, especially on television shows where multiple characters are developed for audience engagement. It’s not always about the character being an embodiment of good behavior; sometimes they are simply the most compelling protagonist in their given world. In some instances, these heroes might be on a journey of redemption or have hidden motivations behind their actions. This year, there were numerous characters who made a significant impact in their respective shows, capturing our attention and shining brightly in the limelight.

Neel – Skeleton Crew

In the recently launched Star Wars series titled “Skeleton Crew,” Neel (played by Robert Timothy Smith) emerged as a beloved character among viewers. This young extraterrestrial stands out with his distinctive blue, elephant-like appearance and displays an endearing mix of awkwardness and kindness. As “Skeleton Crew” is still ongoing, the details of Neel’s storyline remain uncertain, but his unwavering loyalty and bravery in perilous situations have already established him as a trusted friend and a hero worth rooting for on TV this year. If his popularity continues, he could very well join the ranks of the most beloved characters not just in this season, but within the broader Star Wars universe.

Teen – Agatha All Along

In the Marvel TV series Agatha All Along, there was much curiosity regarding Joe Locke’s enigmatic new character, initially known as Teen. However, it was later disclosed that this character was actually Billy Kaplan, a Jewish teenager who happened to be present when Wanda Maximoff cast her reality-bending spell over Westview. This event transferred the soul of Wanda’s son, Billy, into Kaplan’s body. As the years passed, he embarked on a quest to uncover truths about his family and his powers along the Witches’ Road. Throughout his journey, Billy demonstrated himself to be a kind-hearted, compassionate, and potent member of the coven. In the finale, fans finally witnessed Billy donning his Wiccan costume, a moment eagerly awaited for years, making him stand out among the series’ diverse cast.

The Ghoul – Fallout

Walton Goggins’ character from Fallout, known as Ghoul, serves as an unconventional hero, deviating from the standard definition. Despite his gruff exterior, he harbors noble intentions. Initially, Cooper Howard, a well-known Hollywood actor, transformed into a Ghoul after enduring years in California’s harsh wasteland. Unlike many of his kind, Howard retained shreds of sanity due to his determination to locate his family. Although the Ghoul can be brutal and may resort to extreme tactics, he is also one of the most formidable gunslingers in the wasteland and a memorable character in the Fallout series.

Jinx – Arcane

In the first season of Arcane, Jinx might not have seemed like a typical hero, but her personal growth transformed her into someone entirely new in Season 2. Born from her troubled family background, Jinx finally finds independence in Season 2, which prompts her to step into the role of a hero. In the undercity, she becomes a symbol of resistance against the oppressive forces of Piltover and Noxus. She also develops a bond with a young girl named Isha, who helps bring out her inner hero. At one instance during Season 2, after freeing a group of Zaunites from Stillwater prison, Jinx acknowledges to Vi that she’s now a hero, making it difficult to deny the truth in her self-proclaimed title.

Knuckles

The initial spin-off from Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog movies focused on Knuckles, the echidna warrior. Although the TV series primarily followed Wade Whipple’s transformation into a warrior, it wouldn’t have been as captivating without the titular character himself. Idris Elba reprised his role to voice Knuckles, lending him an allure of charm, power, and signature brash wit. In the series, Knuckles not only gained fame as a movie hero but also as a TV one. Despite some flaws shared with the Sonic the Hedgehog films, it successfully highlighted Knuckles and set the stage for his future appearances.
