This article contains spoilers for The Outer Worlds.
In June 2021, a preview for “The Outer Worlds 2” was released, accompanied by the slogan: “A new star system, a new crew, but the same ‘Outer Worlds’ experience.” Since then, Obsidian Entertainment has been relatively tight-lipped about the sequel’s location. The only information shared with fans is that it will be set in the Arcadia Star System, as mentioned in the Steam description for “The Outer Worlds 2”. This implies that players will depart from Halcyon and embark on a fresh journey.
In essence, while it’s possible that some characters from the initial The Outer Worlds may not make an appearance, it’s more likely that most of them won’t return. Given that the game emphasizes space exploration fueled by faster-than-light technology and the influence of various mega-corporations across the cosmos, players might encounter familiar faces from The Outer Worlds, but expect these encounters to occur in a totally new time, location, and identity.
Characters Who Could Make a Comeback in The Outer Worlds 2
- Lilya Hagen
- Junlei Tennyson
- SAM
- Ellie Fenhill
- Martin Callahan
Lilya Hagen
In simpler terms, Lilya Hagen serves as the CEO of Sublight Salvage & Shipping, her operational base being onboard the spacecraft called the Groundbreaker. Notably known for its questionable business practices, Sublight is often referred to as a covert network providing “transportation” and “waste disposal” services. The Groundbreaker, unlike other structures in Halcyon, isn’t bound by gravity, making it a floating entity that could potentially reappear with Lilya and other Groundbreaker characters in the sequel, depending on the ending selected in ‘The Outer Worlds’.
Junlei Tennyson
Discussing the Groundbreaker is incomplete without referring to its main engineer, Junlei. In The Outer Worlds, many of Junlei’s missions centered on repairing the Groundbreaker’s machinery and eliminating unwanted elements from its lower levels. Additionally, there was a sweet romance quest that revolved around Junlei and one of the player’s cherished companions, Parvati.
SAM
In a nutshell, SAM (Sanitation Automechanical Maintenance) is a manufacturing-made sanitation robot transformed into a weapon, which instead of genuine AI, repeats corporate slogans. In the game The Outer Worlds, it functions as a formidable companion, capable of withstanding heavy attacks and dishing out significant damage. Given their prevalence, it’s plausible that a SAM (or at least one) might show up in Arcadia.
Ellie Fenhill
As a dedicated fan, I can confidently say that among the unique characters in The Outer Worlds, Ellie is one of the few who manages to survive no matter what choices the player makes. Trained as a doctor, born with a silver spoon, and posing as a privateer, Ellie’s story concludes with two possible outcomes, both finding her on the Groundbreaker. In one scenario, she eventually acquires her own ship and embarks on a new journey. It’s plausible that this journey might lead her to some part of the Arcadia system, promising more exciting adventures.
Martin Callahan
In the game “The Outer Worlds”, there’s a character named Martin Callahan who is adored by many players, some even wishing they could romance him. He is the representative of Spacer’s Choice on board the Groundbreaker, and he wears the Spacer’s Choice Moon Man head so frequently that it seems like he has become one with it. If given a chance, it would be delightful to encounter at least one character in the game who acknowledges the informal symbol of the franchise by sporting the iconic Moon Man head.
Bonus: Auntie Cleo
In The Outer Worlds, Auntie Cleo may not have appeared physically, but her influence was palpable throughout the game. It appears that she will play a more significant role in the sequel. In the first trailer for The Outer Worlds 2, we see that Auntie Cleo has acquired both Spacer’s Choice and Rizzo’s businesses, which are now known as Auntie’s Choice Co. and Fizzo’s, with advertisements featuring her image. Additionally, Auntie Cleo was the main adversary in the Outer Worlds episode of Amazon’s Secret Level.
