Outlast Developer Red Barrels Suffers Major Data Breach; Company Information Compromised

As a seasoned gamer who has seen his fair share of cyber attacks and game launches, I must say, this news about Red Barrels‘ data breach is quite disheartening. The studio behind Outlast and Outlast 2, two games that have given me countless hours of chilling horror, now faces an adversary far more sinister – hackers.

It seems that Red Barrels, creators of the psychological horror games Outlast and Outlast 2, have experienced a significant data leak, potentially affecting their ongoing projects and staff members.

The studio confirmed the cyber attack in a statement online on Wednesday.

Red Barrels apologizes for informing you that their internal computer network has been affected by a security breach. This incident allowed access to certain data within their system.

They continued: “A group of leading external cybersecurity experts has been mandated to conduct an in-depth investigation into the incident. We also notified stakeholders potentially affected by the event and the relevant authorities.”

According to Red Barrels, they’ve wrapped up their investigation on the issue and have managed to “keep it under control”. However, sadly, this situation has caused some setbacks in their development projects.

They mentioned that the impact on our project schedule is substantial. We’ll strive to adhere to our plan, however, certain aspects may need to be postponed. As soon as possible, we will provide a comprehensive update regarding these delays.

We regard both this incident and the protection of the data entrusted to us as highly important matters. Given the ever-changing landscape of cyber threats, our studio is committed to adopting effective safety measures based on industry best practices to maintain a secure workspace for our team members, collaborators, and gamers.

According to our findings, Red Barrels didn’t explicitly state what specific data was affected in their data breach, but TopMob has discovered that some types of data were compromised. From the leaked files, it appears that the culprits obtained access to multiple game source codes, game builds, personnel records, and even corporate credit card details.

TopMob has chosen not to release the data obtained from the breach, instead choosing to share it with the appropriate law enforcement agencies. Meanwhile, Red Barrels has secured their social media platforms by making them private.
