Over $1 Million Worth of Pokemon Cards Allegedly Stolen

Highlights

  • Pokemon TCG cards are a hot target for thieves due to their high value, making sellers and collectors vulnerable.
  • A small business suffered a $1.2 million loss after two brazen heists targeting their Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Magic cards.
  • Pokemon TCG cards lack individual identification, posing challenges in recovering stolen cards and proving ownership.

As a long-time collector and seller of Pokemon TCG cards, I’ve seen my fair share of scams and thefts in this community. But nothing quite compares to the recent news of a small business in England losing over $1.2 million worth of cards in two separate heists.

A business proprietor has disclosed that their warehouse experienced the theft of over a million dollars’ value of Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) merchandise in two bold burglaries. This substantial loss poses a significant challenge for the business, and underscores an ongoing issue within the Pokemon TCG community.

Sadly, crime can occur anywhere there’s potential for profit, and recently, “Pokemon TCG” cards have become an attractive target. A shocking daytime robbery at a game store took place, resulting in an employee being attacked over three precious “Pokemon TCG” cards. Fortunately, no one was harmed during this incident, but the financial damage is significant.

In Newton Aycliffe, England, on June 14, 2023, a warehouse belonging to Total Cards shop was broken into. The owner, Adrian Marsden, disclosed that valuable trading cards such as Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Magic: The Gathering were taken from the inventory during the intrusion. The police were informed, and the entry point left by the burglars was repaired. However, this was not the end of the ordeal as the thieves returned for a second attempt.

Pokemon TCG Thieves Return

On June 23rd, the criminals struck again, and this time they appeared more confident following their previous burglary. Upon entering the building, they swiftly diverted the security cameras to evade detection. The intruders were believed to have spent around 45 minutes inside the premises. They made off with a substantial amount of merchandise and transported it to a parked van. When the store owners returned, they discovered that their stock had been completely emptied out, with a particular emphasis on “Pokemon” cards. The estimated damage came up to an astounding £1 million, or roughly $1.2 million USD, in stolen “Pokemon Trading Card Game” merchandise according to Marsden’s assessment.

The small business suffered greatly from this incident as the thieves made away with a significant amount of valuable “Pokemon TCG” cards, and despite insurance coverage helping to mitigate some of the financial damage, no arrests were made and the case was closed by the authorities. It’s regrettable that these stolen items are likely to have been sold and resold, spreading throughout the community, with unsuspecting buyers now in possession of ill-gotten merchandise.

Regrettably, identifying and verifying the authenticity of expensive Pokemon TCG cards poses a significant challenge for retailers and collectors. Due to their high value, these cards are frequently targeted by unscrupulous individuals. Unlike other collectibles, they do not have unique identification marks, making it difficult to prove ownership if a card gets lost or stolen. Consequently, selling Pokemon TCG cards can be a risky endeavor, as it may attract unwanted attention from dishonest people. Whether it’s a large retailer, a small business, or an individual collector or seller, the market for these cards is fraught with potential issues.
