Over 10 Games Are Leaving PS Plus Extra in September 2024

Highlights

  • PS Plus Extra will lose 12 games in September 2024.
  • The list of departures includes heavy hitters like Horizon Forbidden West, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, and NieR Replicant.

As a long-time PlayStation enthusiast who has seen countless changes and updates to the platform over the years, I must admit that the upcoming departures from the PS Plus Extra library have left me feeling rather disheartened. The removal of heavy hitters like Horizon Forbidden West, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, and NieR Replicant is certainly a blow to the collection, and it’s always disappointing when games I’ve yet to play are taken away before I can get my hands on them.

In September 2024, it’s been confirmed that 12 games from the PlayStation Plus Extra library will be removed, including popular titles such as Horizon Forbidden West, NieR Replicant, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, and others. While it’s not uncommon for games to leave PS Plus each month, the impending departure of a first-party game like Horizon Forbidden West has piqued the interest of many gamers.

Sony regularly updates the PS Plus Extra library with fresh games on the third Tuesday of each month, and occasionally removes some titles from the service. Most games remain in the library for at least six months, giving subscribers ample time to play them if they wish. Additionally, PS Plus Extra features a “Last Call to Play” section that highlights games due to leave the service next month. Typically, this list is published a month ahead of time, but recently, over half of the August games scheduled for departure were unexpectedly announced only 12 days ago, leaving little time for eager players to enjoy them before they’re gone.

Following its regular schedule, Sony has refreshed the “Last Chance to Play” section on PS Plus Extra with a total of 12 games set to exit the service in September 2024. These include popular titles like “Horizon Forbidden West,” “Marvel’s Midnight Suns,” “Alien Isolation,” “Cloudpunk,” “Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2,” “NieR Replicant,” and “Spiritfarer.” Additionally, several “Star Ocean” games such as “The Divine Force,” “Integrity and Faithlessness,” “Till the End of Time,” “First Departure R,” and “The Last Hope” will also be taken off PS Plus Extra next month. This upcoming removal of games marks the largest roster since June 2024, when a total of 14 games exited PS Plus Extra.

It’s worth noting that Horizon Forbidden West has become another instance of a PlayStation exclusive title appearing on their own service. This game was added to PS Plus Extra in February 2023, which is a year after its initial release on both PS4 and PS5. This move is surprising given Sony’s reluctance to emulate the Xbox Game Pass approach, which involves making first-party games available day and date on a subscription service. However, Horizon Forbidden West didn’t debut on PS Plus Extra as a day one release, but it did join the service much sooner than any other PlayStation first-party game has previously done.

In December 2023, the Insomniac data breach revealed that Sony was testing the Game Pass model by offering Horizon Forbidden West on PS Plus Extra. This move attracted a large number of players to PS Plus Extra but apparently stalled premium sales for Horizon Forbidden West. Now that sales seem to have slowed for the game, it’s puzzling why Sony would take it off PS Plus Extra. Some speculate that this could be in preparation for a potential PS5 Pro graphics update for Horizon: Forbidden West later this year, which might rekindle interest and boost sales again.
