As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, the announcement of Overwatch 2 testing the much-missed 6v6 mode in Season 14 has me positively giddy like a schoolboy on Christmas Eve! I remember fondly the days of the original Overwatch, back when we had two tanks per team and the battles were more dynamic than a game of chess.
If you’ve been yearning for the 6v6 gameplay style from the original Overwatch and were hoping to see it in Overwatch 2, hold on to your excitement because, although temporarily, you’ll have a chance to relive that familiar experience. Blizzard Entertainment has shared that they will be trying out the 6v6 mode for Overwatch 2 during Season 14.
Today, the studio has revealed in a fresh blog post that they are planning two separate tests for the 6v6 mode in Overwatch 2, starting from the upcoming game season. As reported by Blizzard, these tests will be implemented during the new season. The first test, scheduled to commence a week into Season 14, deviates from the typical 2-2-2 role queue found in the original Overwatch. Instead, it will operate under an “Open Queue” system that they call “Min 1, Max 3”: each team of six players must have at least one representative from each role and no more than three.
The second trial occurs during Season 14’s midpoint, featuring a standard 2-2-2 team setup (two damage characters, two support characters, and two tanks). However, it will introduce concepts from Overwatch 2 like reduced crowd control abilities and hero revisions. These 6v6 trials will be available in Unranked alongside other modes without replacing others such as seasonal events or Quick Play. Blizzard also mentioned that they’ll make adjustments to these two trial modes, particularly affecting the tank role, as their power and durability will decrease.
Can 5v5 and 6v6 Co-Exist in Overwatch 2?
For those pondering if Overwatch 2 might someday offer both 5v5 and 6v6 gameplay modes, it’s something Blizzard has contemplated too. At present, the development team can’t definitively say yes or no. However, they aim to create a game that will captivate players. If the community expresses a strong desire for this mode and sends clear signals, Blizzard is open to the possibility, recognizing that their players might prefer diverse gaming experiences.
Excitedly counting down the days until Overwatch 2’s Season 13 ends this month, and with each season lasting approximately nine weeks, it seems we’ll be diving into Season 14 around mid-December. Personally, I can hardly wait to experience the return of the thrilling 6v6 mode, even if it’s just for a short while. It feels like an early holiday gift from the developers to fans like us! So let’s make sure our enthusiasm reaches Blizzard, so they understand the community’s desire to keep the 6v6 gameplay going strong.
If you’ve just started playing Overwatch 2, you should know that its predecessor, released in 2016, wasn’t free-to-play and had a team format of 6 versus 6 in all modes. To promote faster gameplay, Blizzard opted to limit the number of tanks in a team to one, aiming to prevent too many shields from congesting the battlefield. Whether this change was beneficial or not is open to interpretation, and it likely depends on who you consult about it.
