Overwatch fans have experienced a lot of changes recently, but this time, the news is good. After three years of referring to the game as a sequel – “Overwatch 2” – Blizzard has decided to drop the numbering and start a fresh new season.
A new chapter began yesterday, February 10th, with the launch of Season 1: Conquest. The update includes a lot of exciting new content like in-game events and animated shorts. It also marks a first for the game – five new playable heroes were released at the same time!
It looks like Blizzard is already seeing positive results from the recent changes to the game. Player numbers on PC have jumped significantly, hitting a new record since the game launched on Steam.
Breaking Records and Dropping Numbers

SteamDB data shows that when the game was still known as ‘Game 2’, it typically had between 20,000 and 50,000 players online at the same time. Although player numbers were consistent, the game had difficulty attracting significantly more players for a long period.
Overwatch saw a huge surge in popularity yesterday, coinciding with the launch of its new Conquest season. The game reached a record high of 165,651 players simultaneously on Steam – a significant and welcome increase.
To put this success into perspective, the game previously peaked at around 75,000 players on Steam when it first launched in August 2023. That means the current number of players is more than double what it was at launch!
Just to add some perspective, Overwatch previously peaked at around 42,000 concurrent players back in January. Currently, the game consistently has over 112,000 players online – that’s even better than its original launch! You can see the live player numbers on SteamDB below if you’re interested.
Removing the ‘2’ and completely relaunching the game appears to have revitalized Overwatch after a difficult time with changes at Blizzard and within the game itself.
Overwatch recently hit a new high on Steam, with 165,651 players online at the same time. This is the most players the game has ever had on the platform.
Players are responding well to the new season, and many are saying “Overwatch is back!” on social media. Now, the challenge for Blizzard is to keep up this positive energy and build on this early success in the coming weeks.
