Overwatch 2 Fans Left Frustrated Over Botched Netflix Series

Overwatch 2 Fans Left Frustrated Over Botched Netflix Series

Key Takeaways

  • Blizzard reportedly had an Overwatch series in development at Netflix that was canceled due to a lawsuit over executive poaching.
  • Overwatch as a franchise has struggled to explore its universe’s stories in any major way, with Overwatch 2‘s planned story missions being scrapped.
  • The lawsuit between Activision and Netflix also led to in-development adaptations of StarCraft and Diablo being canceled.

As a long-time Overwatch fan who has witnessed the game’s evolution since its inception, I can’t help but feel a sense of profound disappointment and disillusionment upon learning about the canceled Netflix series. The thought of an animated series based on the rich lore and captivating characters of Overwatch was nothing short of exhilarating. It would have been a dream come true for many fans, myself included, to delve deeper into the world of Future Earth through this medium.

It appears that a Netflix series based on the game “Overwatch,” which was being developed by Blizzard, was reportedly terminated due to legal issues stemming from Netflix allegedly poaching an executive from Blizzard during negotiations. If the poaching incident hadn’t occurred and the executive had remained with Blizzard, fans of “Overwatch 2” may have been treated to their own animated series.

The tale set in the universe of Overwatch has found itself in an unusual situation since the initial release of the first-person shooter game back in 2016. Initially, this FPS didn’t offer a proper narrative medium beyond its exceptional animated shorts. While the 2022 sequel initially intended to advance the story through its story missions, indications point towards most of Overwatch 2’s PvE (Player vs Environment) content being abandoned.

It turns out that yet another chance for engaging Overwatch storytelling has slipped away. As reported by Jason Schreier, author of PLAY NICE: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment and Bloomberg reporter, Blizzard and Netflix had been working on an Overwatch series in the late 2010s before the launch of Overwatch 2. However, the development of these projects came to a standstill when Spencer Neumann, former CFO of Activision, was poached by Netflix, resulting in a lawsuit in 2020.

Netflix Almost Had an Overwatch Series

During a Reddit AMA, Schreier shared details from a Variety report about a lawsuit. It appears that Neumann was approached by Netflix towards the end of 2018, which was during his three-year contract with Activision and while they were discussing an animated series deal. This move violated Neumann’s agreement that prohibited him from considering other job offers while working at Activision. Consequently, he was terminated. Soon after, in January 2019, Neumann joined Netflix as their CFO, leading to Activision Blizzard filing a lawsuit against Netflix for allegedly breaking California state employment laws.

As a passionate gamer, I’ve been hit hard by the fallout between Activision and Netflix. The lawsuit seems to have put an end not just to the Overwatch series, but also other promising Blizzard projects like StarCraft and Diablo. Sadly, even the in-development Netflix shows for these franchises were scrapped due to this mess. With the lingering bitterness from Neumann’s poaching incident, it seems unlikely we’ll see any collaboration between these two giants anytime soon.

Without a doubt, the announcement left Overwatch 2 enthusiasts utterly dismayed. A Twitter user labeled it as “the blunder of the decade,” while another expressed their disappointment by saying “It feels like the cosmos itself is against the tale of Overwatch ever being told.” Given the vast array of characters and narratives available, the potential for an Overwatch animated series appears boundless, but unfortunately, storytelling in Future Earth seems destined to remain stagnant. Of course, there’s always a chance that Blizzard might astonish players with additional stories for Overwatch 2 down the line; until then, fans can only envision what could have been.
