Overwatch 2 Game Mode is Going Away Forever

In simple terms, the Hero Mastery game mode within Overwatch 2 is set to be permanently discontinued soon, starting from Season 19. Players will only have a few more months to complete these Hero Mastery courses before they are completely removed from the game for good.

In simpler terms, Hero Mastery is a game mode within Overwatch 2 that was introduced as part of the mid-Season 6 update in September 2023. Over the past couple of years, additional versions of this hero-focused challenge course have been added for more than a dozen characters in Overwatch 2.

Overwatch 2 Removing Hero Mastery in Season 19

Unfortunately, the Hero Mastery game mode in Overwatch 2 will soon be discontinued. In a recent post on their forum, the Overwatch 2 Community Manager Kaedi announced that this game mode would be phased out. No new courses will be introduced, and all existing ones will be taken down from the game starting with Season 19, which is expected to release in late October or early November. This means players only have about two months left to enjoy Hero Mastery before it disappears permanently from Overwatch 2.

In Season 18, players can continue joining the fray to grab any of the Lifetime challenge rewards from Hero Mastery before they vanish. Plus, those who accomplish or have already achieved Mastery I and Mastery III before Hero Mastery is phased out will additionally receive a complimentary Overwatch 2 Epic Loot Box and unique Player Title. This offers some extra motivations to give the game mode another try before it’s gone for good.

Although many players have appreciated Hero Mastery, it hasn’t been widely favored by the majority, notably falling short compared to more successful modes like Stadium, Competitive, and Quick Play. Interestingly, this outcome mirrors the reason behind the June 2024 withdrawal of Overwatch 2’s multiplayer Hero Mastery Gauntlet mode. By entirely phasing out Hero Mastery, Blizzard intends to concentrate more on these other modes, reducing some of the visual congestion in Overwatch 2.

Fortunately for Overwatch 2 enthusiasts, there won’t be a lack of activities during Season 18 and beyond. Blizzard recently unveiled the trailer for this upcoming update, showcasing changes like a revamped progression system, the introduction of the Payload Race game mode in Stadium, and a new support hero called Wuyang. Additionally, they confirmed that an Overwatch 2 crossover event with Persona 5 is on the horizon, featuring skins that morph Overwatch heroes into the Phantom Thieves. Although details about the collaboration are scarce at present, fans can expect to see a Joker skin and at least three others when it’s officially announced in the coming weeks.
