The sequel to Overwatch, titled Overwatch 2, has faced numerous challenges since its debut in 2022. Blizzard’s hero shooter has experienced a mix of highs and lows, with the new iteration often finding itself at the center of controversy due to contentious development choices. Positioned as a fresh start for the franchise, Overwatch 2 has been mired in controversies. However, recent comments from game director Aaron Keller may hint at a brighter future.
At this year’s Gamescom, PCGamesN spoke with Overwatch 2’s team leader, Keller, and he shared some intriguing insights about the game’s future. When inquired about its questionable standing, Keller explained, “That is one of the reasons we’re taking bolder steps.” Now that Season 18 has begun, Overwatch 2 is continuing to develop, and it’s reassuring to see that Keller acknowledges some fans’ dissatisfaction, suggesting that changes are being actively pursued. However, it seems that the journey ahead could still be challenging.
Overwatch 2 is Embracing Trying New Things, But the Unpredictable Scrapping of Game Modes Needs to End
Stadium Enters the Chat, While Hero Mastery is Kicked to the Curb
In his conversation about the future of Overwatch 2, Keller emphasized that the stadium was a significant point of discussion. He clarified, “Our team is open to experimenting and exploring different experiences within Overwatch. At present, we’re concentrating on competitive Player versus Player (PvP) scenarios. However, it’s essential for us to ensure that these new endeavors align with the game’s overall structure while preserving its identity.
In Overwatch 2, Stadium has brought a thrilling element, but unfortunately, the Hero Mastery mode will cease operation during Season 19. Although Keller’s words about exploring innovative ideas and being open to risk-taking sound appealing, the cancellation of Hero Mastery leaves a slight bitter taste. To be clear, Hero Mastery wasn’t particularly well-liked by many players, but Blizzard’s decision to discontinue certain modes has been a topic of debate for quite some time now. Modes like Two Control Point have only been accessible through the Arcade, while the most heated discussions centered around the cancellation of PvE. However, removing modes such as Hero Mastery and Two Control Point might be essential for Overwatch 2 to make way for narrative-focused content.

Stadium was added to Overwatch 2 back in April alongside Season 16.
The team is open to experimenting with fresh ideas and discovering what unique adventures we can create within the game, Overwatch.
Keller’s Past Comments Hint at a Return to Storytelling
In July, Keller talked about the controversy surrounding Overwatch 2’s abandoned PvE mode with IGN. He suggested that the development team might still be aiming to focus on story-driven content in the future. He mentioned, “Honestly speaking, we had a significant plan for story integration within the game. That was the PvE aspect including the campaign and such. Unfortunately, this didn’t materialize. So, it was quite a turning point for us when that happened. We are keen on revisiting this.

As a devoted fan, I must say that the revelations at Gamescom were encouraging and it seems clear that the developers are tuned in to our input. Yet, with various game modes being closed frequently, there’s an apprehension that PvE and narrative-driven content might be postponed, just as previous modes have been. It’s challenging not to feel a pang of disappointment when anticipating the next installment of Overwatch 2, given the possibility it could vanish unexpectedly from our radars.
In Season 18, Stadium has added Winston, Brigitte, and Pharah.

It remains to be seen whether Overwatch 2 will successfully execute its experimental content. The introduction of modes like Stadium is a promising move, but if the game continues to prioritize expanding its narrative, let’s hope it manages to avoid the pattern of neglecting these aspects in favor of other developments.
