Summary

  • The former lead on Overwatch 2‘s Invasion PvE missions has been rehired by Blizzard.
  • Fans hope this means new PvE modes will be added to the game.
  • Overwatch 2’s Avatar: The Last Airbender event will end on December 31.

As a seasoned Overwatch 2 player with countless hours spent in the game’s PvP battles, I can’t help but feel a glimmer of hope rekindle in my heart upon hearing the news that Jorge Murillo, the former lead on Overwatch 2’s Invasion PvE missions, has been rehired by Blizzard. My fingers dance across the keyboard as I type this, eagerly anticipating the potential return of the PvE content that was once promised but never fully delivered.

Fervor among fans of Overwatch 2 surges as a former employee’s rehire by Blizzard sparks speculation about the potential resurgence of Player versus Environment (PvE) content. Simultaneously, Overwatch 2 enthusiasts are engrossed in various activities such as the comeback of Winter Wonderland game modes, the trial run of a 6v6 role queue system, and an exciting Avatar: The Last Airbender crossover event. Furthermore, Season 14 has recently introduced Hazard, Overwatch 2’s new tank hero, boasting wall-climbing abilities and the capacity to infiltrate enemy lines from behind.

For quite some time, Player versus Environment (PvE) modes have played a minor role in the game ‘Overwatch’. It was anticipated that with the release of ‘Overwatch 2’ in 2022, PvE would become more prominent. However, players were disheartened when ‘Overwatch 2’ launched without the promised PvE content, as this was a significant reason for creating a sequel. Although ‘Overwatch 2’s Season 6 Invasion, released in August 2023, introduced paid PvE missions, these missions were temporary and didn’t last long. Consequently, Blizzard announced the termination of all future PvE content development for ‘Overwatch 2’. Currently, players can only expect to experience PvE action during special events like Halloween Terror, which features the popular Junkenstein’s Revenge modes, but these occurrences are limited to once a year.

The prospect of Player versus Environment (PvE) modes in Overwatch 2 is resurfacing again, given that Blizzard has brought back Jorge Murillo, a former lead on the Invasion PvE missions for Overwatch 2. Recently, Murillo updated his Twitter bio to reflect his new role as a senior level designer at Blizzard, working once more on Overwatch 2. Murillo was previously let go from Blizzard in January of this year but later joined Frost Giant Studios as a level designer for the real-time-strategy game Stormgate. Now, he’s back with Blizzard again.

Overwatch 2’s Former PvE Lead Has Been Rehired

It appears that Murillo’s comeback to Blizzard has ignited discussions among Overwatch 2 players, who are optimistic about potential new Player versus Environment (PvE) game modes in the well-known hero shooter. While this enthusiasm is understandable, it’s worth noting that Murillo’s past involvement with Overwatch includes both PvP and PvE experiences, suggesting he might be contributing to the development of new PvP maps instead.

It seems that if Overwatch 2 does include more PvE missions, they might not be available soon. For now, the Avatar: The Last Airbender event in Overwatch 2 ends on December 31st, giving players until January 6th to enjoy it fully, as well as the Winter Wonderland event which also concludes on that day. On the same note, 6v6 gameplay is expected to finish at the same time. However, Season 14 is anticipated to continue for another month following this, wrapping up in early February.
