Summary
- Abandoning Overwatch 2 matches can result in penalties like wait times and skill rating reduction.
- Twitch streamer durpee discovered an exploit allowing players to leave matches without repercussions.
- Despite the community calling for harsher punishments, Blizzard has yet to address the exploit.
A player of Overwatch 2 has found a trick that lets gamers exit a match without receiving any consequences. Similar to other competitive games, Blizzard is taking steps to maintain a balanced and fair gaming experience for Overwatch 2 participants. To achieve this goal, the developers impose penalties when they detect inappropriate behavior.
Players who walk away from two or three games out of every 20 non-ranked matches they’ve played are subject to penalty wait times ranging from 2 minutes up to 10 minutes, 2 hours, and even 48 hours, depending on the frequency. In contrast, leaving matches in the competitive mode within Overwatch 2 carries harsher consequences, as it prevents players from starting a new match until their abandoned game concludes. Repeated departures increase the player’s waiting time to join another competitive match and decrease their skill rating. The consequences for quitting can escalate to seasonal bans, lost rewards, and even a permanent ban from competitive play in extreme cases. However, a flaw has recently been uncovered within this system.
Streamer Mason “durpee” Kuehne demonstrated that exiting an Overwatch 2 game didn’t lead to any penalties. He posted a video where he played as Reinhardt and temporarily left the game to invite another Overwatch 2 player. During his absence, he was out of the match for a brief period. Upon his return, the game displayed a replay of his character’s demise, seemingly unaware that he had left. In now-deleted tweets, durpee mentioned that this finding was made in a 6v6 game and that even ten minutes after the match ended, no penalties or skill rating adjustments were applied to him.
Overwatch 2’s Effort to Stop Players From Leaving Matches
Despite regulations set in place to discourage players from abandoning matches within Overwatch 2, the issue persists and causes frustration among the community, who frequently advocate for stricter penalties. Over time, adjustments have been made: during Season 4, developers started penalizing players who left competitive matches more severely. The current system was put into place with the start of Season 10, when Overwatch 2 began to impose harsher punishments on leavers. Additionally, changes were made to enable gamers to participate in competitive play together with friends, regardless of their rank difference.
As a devoted Overwatch 2 gamer, I’ve noticed that Blizzard hasn’t spoken on durpree’s recent discovery of an exploit yet. Given durpree’s reputation within our gaming community, we’re confident they’ll address it soon. However, I personally wouldn’t risk using the exploit since it lets players do something they shouldn’t. Remember, Overwatch 2 has the power to ban accounts at any moment for such actions. Stay safe and keep gaming responsibly!
