As a seasoned Overwatch 2 gamer with over a decade of gaming under my belt, I must say, this latest discovery has left me both baffled and amused. Finding hidden easter eggs has always been part of the gaming experience, but this one takes the cake!
Some players of Overwatch 2 have been uncovering a hidden Easter egg that the game developers at Blizzard Entertainment appear to have stashed away in the game. This Easter egg in Overwatch 2 can be discovered exclusively on the Antarctic Peninsula, and it seems to hint at an elusive skin for one of the hero shooter’s most beloved characters.
In contrast to many games that include fishing as an optional pastime, Overwatch 2 isn’t among them in its traditional sense. Yet, players have discovered an unconventional method of fishing within the Antarctic Peninsula map in Overwatch 2, and they’ve been doing it for almost two years. This unique approach to fishing involves shooting rounds at strategically placed fishing holes, causing fish to jump out and flop around on the surrounding ice briefly before vanishing.
Approximately two years ago, a novel feature was incorporated into the game. Recently, some gamers stumbled upon an unusual occurrence while fishing with guns. One of these players, Reddit user Wojtug, posted a video showcasing a bug-eyed goldfish jumping out from one of the holes and scattering sparkling golden particles in the air. Although Blizzard has yet to announce any plans for introducing another type of fish onto the Antarctic Peninsula map in Overwatch 2, similar instances of this goldfish have been noticed previously by players.
Overwatch 2 Goldfish is a Throwback to a Popular Rare Skin
Observant gamers have pointed out that the fish resource utilized in the fishing mini-game is, in fact, a recycled element from another fish depicted in the Happi Genji skin for the Overwatch 2 character. This unique skin was unveiled as part of the original Overwatch during the Overwatch League’s summer of 2022. The skin gained immediate popularity due to its humanizing touch, which involved removing Genji’s mask and dressing him in shorts and a traditional Japanese festival coat. While the skin predominantly features green, white, and brown tones, a striking blue accessory on his waist catches the eye: a water-filled plastic bag containing what appears to be a familiar goldfish.
Some players are curious if Blizzard has planned rewards for hitting the goldfish in Overwatch 2, as they float around in ice holes. However, since Blizzard hasn’t confirmed its existence yet, it appears to be an enjoyable new Easter egg in the game.
