As a seasoned gamer who has been following Overwatch since its inception, I must admit that the Grim Effigy Reaper Epic skin from Season 13 Battle Pass of Overwatch 2 has piqued my interest. It’s intriguing to see a new skin based on the original model, especially when most of the skins are designed for the updated models.
In the Season 13 Battle Pass for Overwatch 2, the Grim Effigy Reaper Epic skin was crafted using his original game model instead of the one from the sequel. It appears that this is the first time Overwatch 2 has introduced a new skin that references a hero’s initial design rather than their updated version.
In the past few days, Overwatch 2 unveiled its Season 13 update, dubbed Spellbinder. This seasonal refresh includes an overhaul of the Overwatch 2 Battle Pass, brimming with witch-themed cosmetics for players to gather. For those who invest in the Premium Battle Pass and progress to Tier 50, they will receive Grim Effigy Reaper – a striking new Epic skin that gives the Talon assassin a goat skull resembling a Leshen from The Witcher 3.
However, one Overwatch 2 player noticed an interesting detail about this particular Reaper skin. Rather than being created over his Overwatch 2 design, Grim Effigy Reaper uses his Overwatch 1 model as a base instead, noticeable by the armor plates on his legs, thicker shotgun cartridges, extra belts, and other subtle details. According to Overwatch 2 fan PANSHOE, who discovered this and shared side-by-side comparisons on Reddit, no other new Epic Reaper skins from Overwatch 2 seem to do so, nor do those of any other hero, making Grim Effigy the first of its kind.
Grim Effigy Reaper Uses His Overwatch 1 Model
It’s tricky to pinpoint the reason behind the decision to base Grim Effigy Reaper in Overwatch 2 on his original design from Overwatch 1. One possibility is that the skin was created long ago, before the final model for Overwatch 2 was completed, and it’s only now being unveiled to players. Another explanation could be that certain elements of his old design, such as the bone-like mask and leg plates, helped convey the Grim Effigy theme more effectively than his sleeker Overwatch 2 design. Regardless, given that Epic skins typically involve color changes and minor adjustments, using an older model for this design is a somewhat unusual choice.
Fans of Overwatch 2 were also intrigued by this incident. Some speculated the artist designing the skin might have accidentally used the wrong character model during creation, yet Overwatch 2 decided to keep it. Despite a few player complaints, many still prefer the original models from Overwatch 1 over their Overwatch 2 versions in specific instances. Generally speaking, though, most players agreed that Reaper’s Epic skins are always impressive, and Grim Effigy is no exception.
