Overwatch 2 Removes Clash from Competitive Play in Season 15

Summary

  • Overwatch 2 will remove Clash from Competitive Play starting in Season 15.
  • Clash has been criticized for facilitating steamrolls and making matches end too quickly.
  • Clash will remain available in Quick Play and other unranked modes.

In the course of Season 14, Overwatch 2 has been announced by Blizzard Entertainment to eliminate the Clash game mode from Competitive Play once Season 15 commences. The popular hero shooter is already making preparations for Season 15 and future seasons.

The intense rivalry for Overwatch 2 is currently being challenged by a new free-to-play hero shooter game called Marvel Rivals, which has quickly gained massive popularity. In response, Blizzard Entertainment has scheduled a major event on February 12, dubbed the Overwatch 2 Spotlight, to highlight upcoming heroes, maps, and significant Player-versus-Player (PvP) changes. While we’ll have to wait until the event on February 12 to see all the surprises it holds, Blizzard has already given fans a taste of what Season 15 will bring for Overwatch 2.

According to Aaron Keller, the director of Overwatch 2, the Clash game mode is being taken out of Competitive play due to some issues. This mode, themed after the Assault maps that were removed from both Quick Play and Competitive years ago, has been causing problems such as steamrolling matches ending quicker than usual in Overwatch games, and some players expressing confusion about which point is active. Since there are concerns about these matters, Blizzard has decided to eliminate Clash from Overwatch 2’s Competitive Play starting with Season 15 on February 18, so they can examine the maps more thoroughly. However, the mode will still be available in Quick Play and other game modes.

Overwatch 2 is Removing Clash from Competitive Play

To be honest, I’ve never encountered any issues with Clash in Overwatch 2. There have been instances where my team was overwhelmed and the match concluded swiftly, but I view these situations positively. In competitive play of Overwatch 2, a quick steamroll is preferable to prolonging an inevitable loss in longer game modes.

Overwatch 2 Season 15 is expected to start on Tuesday, February 18.

In terms of a preferred change for Overwatch 2’s Competitive Play, I’d go with the removal of Flashpoint mode. From the moment it was introduced to Overwatch 2, I’ve had mixed feelings about it. Despite improvements like faster spawn speeds, Flashpoint remains my least favorite game type in the hero shooter. Ideally, I’d prefer no modes or matches be removed from Overwatch 2, including Assault maps. The diverse range of game types makes longer gaming sessions more engaging and worth dealing with the occasional frustrations that some modes may bring, in my viewpoint.
