Starting October 30th, Overwatch 2 will return to its original seven-round format for Competitive Play. This change comes after players shared negative feedback about the updates made with the launch of Season 19.
Stadium is a brand-new, permanent game mode in Overwatch 2. It lets players pick special Powers, Items, and Gadgets each round to change how certain heroes play, creating fun and unpredictable matches. Stadium initially used a best-of-seven format, but starting with Season 19, Overwatch 2 switched to best-of-five to keep matches from getting too long.
Overwatch 2 Competitive Stadium Going Back to Best of Seven
Overwatch 2 is bringing back the original seven-round format for Competitive Play. Game Director Aaron Keller announced on Twitter that the change will happen on October 30th. There will be a short, one-hour break while the update is applied, but players should otherwise be able to play normally.
Keller explains the change is happening because the current best-of-five format hasn’t been ideal. Adding more potential rounds allows for more strategic adjustments and exciting comebacks, making matches feel more competitive, even if they take a bit longer. A detailed explanation of the decision will be available in the next Director’s Take blog post in early November.
Although a few players liked the older five-round matches, most fans are pleased with this update, particularly now that Stadium Gadgets are available in Overwatch 2. Players who still want to experience best-of-five matches can do so in the Unranked Quick Play mode, which also features automatic team filling and allows players on all platforms to play together.
The next major update for Overwatch 2 is planned for around November 11th as the mid-Season 19 patch. While some smaller updates might come before it, this patch will introduce the Cyber Fuel Junkrat skin – the first time a second Mythic hero skin has been released within the same season. Around the same time, players will get a chance to try out Hero 45, giving us our first look at the final new hero planned for 2025. Currently, we don’t know which heroes or maps will be available in Stadium mode, but Overwatch 2 might still have some surprises in store. If not, Season 20, launching December 9th, will definitely bring new content to the mode.
