Today’s highlight on Overwatch 2 demonstrated that Blizzard isn’t backing down from the challenge posed by Marvel Rivals. In a 34-minute presentation, Blizzard unveiled numerous upcoming enhancements for Overwatch 2, such as an innovative new perk system allowing players to personalize their hero abilities and a fresh third-person Stadium game mode. Overwatch 2’s Season 15 Update Has Some Big Features That Cater to OW1 Fans

Overwatch 2 Season 15 Is Bringing Back Loot Boxes

At their peak in the late 2010s, loot boxes sparked intense debate within the video game industry. Essentially, these were virtual crates filled with a variety of in-game items. Due to their random nature, numerous gaming regulatory bodies considered them as a form of gambling. Consequently, significant limitations were enforced on them across many countries.

Initially, Blizzard opted to discontinue loot boxes when launching Overwatch 2 in 2022. This move led to a wave of dissatisfaction among fans. At the game’s debut, players could only acquire skins by progressing through the premium battle pass or directly purchasing them using Overwatch 2’s internal currency. In contrast, loot boxes from Overwatch 1 offered an opportunity for players to obtain costly skins at a reduced price or even for free if they leveled up.

After long-awaited requests, fans are granted their wish as loot boxes make a comeback in Overwatch 2 with the commencement of Season 15. The latest Overwatch 2 Spotlight revealed that loot boxes will be accessible through the free tier of the battle pass and weekly rewards, while it appears players will receive a legendary skin for every 20 loot boxes they open.

Overwatch 2 Season 15 begins on February 18.

Overwatch 2 Season 15 Doubles Down on OW Classic and 6v6

The recent trials for Overwatch 2 have successfully lured back veteran players, providing a gameplay style reminiscent of the initial phase of the original hero shooter. As evidenced in the latest Overwatch 2 Spotlight, Blizzard is committed to refining these tests, with a dedicated Competitive queue for 6v6 being introduced as part of Season 15’s mid-season update. In this new competitive mode for 6v6, teams will be restricted to having only two tanks each. This queue will operate on an open system.

Besides introducing a separate Competitive mode for the 6v6 format, Overwatch 2 will also introduce an “Overwatch Classic” game mode. This new mode pays homage to one of the original game’s most notorious competitive metas. Known by the name of the Esports team that reigned supreme in the 2018 North American Overwatch Open Division Season 2, the GOATS meta involves a team selecting three supports and three tanks. The GOATS meta gained massive popularity in 2019 and will resurface during the mid-season update of Overwatch 2 Season 15.
