As a seasoned Overwatch player who’s navigated the battlefields from Hanamura to Horizon Lunar Colony, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming Season 12 and the introduction of the Throne of Anubis map! This ancient Egyptian battleground promises to be a visual feast for the eyes, not to mention a strategic challenge that’ll have me scrambling for cover in those sprawling ruins.

In the upcoming Season 12, slated for release on August 20, Overwatch 2 unveiled a series of in-game clips featuring the Throne of Anubis map, which will be among the two battlefields introduced in Clash mode when it joins the main gameplay modes within Overwatch 2.

In their latest announcement, Blizzard unveiled the trailer for Overwatch 2’s Season 12, titled New Frontiers. This update introduces a host of new elements to the first-person shooter, including the formal release of the Clash game mode. This mode centers around a sequence of capture points that must be seized on a symmetrical, linear map. When initially introduced for testing, Clash only offered one map: Hanaoka, an updated rendition of the Hanamura map from the original Overwatch.

It’s worth noting that with Clash officially joining the game, Overwatch 2 has clarified that Hanaoka isn’t the only map for this new game mode. In addition to Hanaoka, Throne of Anubis will also be one of the two maps available in Clash starting from Season 12. Although the map was previously shown in a trailer, a recent video posted on the Overwatch 2 Twitter offers players a guided tour of this battlefield. The action takes place across an outdoor city, ancient Egyptian ruins, and even delves into the heart of Anubis’ divine programming sanctum where heroes must engage in fierce battles.

New Overwatch 2 Clash Map – Throne of Anubis

The Throne of Anubis is a revamped version of the Temple of Anubis, much like Hanaoka is to Hanamura. Both of the originals were old Overwatch Assault maps included in the game’s initial release. The Temple of Anubis was actually the first map ever developed for the game, and in the lore, it is the place where the Omnic Crisis first began. As Clash is an evolution of Assault – a game mode that was removed from the core rotation in Overwatch 2 – it is fitting that both of these iconic maps have been remade for the new game mode.

It’s not a surprise that players have encountered the Throne of Anubis before, as it was hinted at in Season 10 when Overwatch 2 introduced its latest hero, Venture. Now, two seasons later, we can expect to see the Throne of Anubis appear in Overwatch 2.

Enthusiasts can’t wait to experiment with the latest map. Many gamers relished Clash during its trial run in April, and are pleased about having numerous maps for the game mode. The Throne of Anubis offers a diverse range of landscapes, and is not only visually captivating but also deeply rooted in the mythology of Overwatch. Players won’t have to wait too long to engage in combat on this map, as it will be accessible from August 20, coinciding with the start of Season 12.
