As a dedicated Overwatch fan since its inception, I must say I was on the brink of despair after the recent events at Blizzard and the uncertain future of PvE in Overwatch 2. But with this heartwarming animated short, I’ve found a glimmer of hope once again. It’s like being reunited with an old friend after a long absence, and it’s reminded me why I fell in love with this game in the first place – the captivating stories and characters.
In a delightful twist, Overwatch 2 recently introduced “Control”, a captivating 3D animated short that delves into the past of Juno, our latest hero from Season 12. This unexpected cinematic offering has left players pleasantly surprised as it’s been over a year since Overwatch 2 unveiled its last one.
The 12th season of Overwatch 2, known as New Frontiers, has made its grand entrance in the first-person shooter world. This latest update brings an abundance of fresh content to the game, but what’s truly captivating is the introduction of a new support hero named Juno, who is the second character introduced in 2024. Prior to her debut, Overwatch 2 shared Juno’s background through a comic, and while the story was compelling, many fans were anticipating a cinematic or animated short for her, but alas, it wasn’t included.
Unbeknownst to them, it turned out that Overwatch 2 had been preparing something special for Juno – a captivating 3D animated short named “Control”. This story chronicles Juno’s heart-wrenching departure from her Martian homeland. Upon a poignant farewell, she encounters an unexpected problem: a piece of debris obstructing one of her thrusters. As panic sets in when she damages her gear and nearly depletes her oxygen supply during a spacewalk, her mother manages to calm her down, allowing Juno to mend her ship and initiate the jump, pledging to devise a means to rescue the colony. The short concludes with Overwatch reaching out to Juno as she descends into Earth’s atmosphere, assuring her that an agent will meet her upon landing in Dorodo, a location depicted on the Overwatch 2 map.
“Control” – First Overwatch 2 3D Animated Short of 2024
In the previous year, Blizzard unveiled “A Great Day,” a 2D animated short showcasing Mauga and Talon in December. The most recent 3D animated short was “Calling,” which was released as a Sojourn cinematic prior to Overwatch 2: Invasion in August 2023, although one might argue that parts of the “Perfect Night” music video by LE SSERAFIM from October could also be considered. However, the “Perfect Night” video is more of a music production than an animated short. Prior to this, “The Wastelander” and “Kiriko” were released, introducing some new characters for Overwatch 2, which came out in 2022. Interestingly, there were periods when no 3D cinematics were produced at all. During the peak of Overwatch 1‘s popularity, two such animations would be released annually – one at BlizzCon and another at Gamescom – so it was fitting that “Control” premiered alongside Blizzard’s grand return to the major German gaming convention.
