As a seasoned Overwatch player, I can confidently say that Junkrat is one of the most chaotic and entertaining characters to play as. His Steel Trap and Concussion Mine combo has led to countless victories, not to mention the sheer joy of hearing enemies scream as they’re immobilized by my traps.
Heroes who can inflict damage are often the preferred pick among gamers eager to dive into a round of Overwatch 2. These characters offer a diverse selection, each equipped with unique skills that make gameplay exciting and enjoyable.
The variety when it comes to damage-dealing characters might be enticing, but it is also likely to be overwhelming for newcomers to the game trying to pick a character to play. With this in mind, we’re going to be looking at five damage heroes that are well-suited for beginners thanks to their ease of use and the simplicity of their abilities.
5 Mei
Ice Queen
- Abilities: Endothermic Blaster, Endothermic Blaster Alt Fire, Ice Wall, and Cryo-Freeze.
- Ultimate Ability: Blizzard
- English and Chinese Mandarin VA: Elise Zhang
Mei elicits both affection and disdain among players. On one hand, fans admire her knack for creating havoc, while opponents struggle against her tactics of slowing them down, barricading with Ice Walls, and self-healing via Cryo-Freeze. Despite this mixed reception, it’s clear that Mei is a character that is both manageable and ideal for novice players.
To hinder opponents, Mei players simply need to aim and fire with their main weapon, releasing a torrent of ice. Her secondary fire, on the other hand, requires more precision, as it discharges an icicle from her blaster that can traverse long distances. This is somewhat similar to a sniper rifle bullet, making it trickier to hit targets at greater distances. A valuable asset for beginners is Mei’s self-healing abilities, which allow her to recuperate when she envelops herself in ice using the Cryo-Freeze ability. Additionally, her Ice Wall is a superb tool for dodging enemies and shielding against attacks. These defensive skills are particularly beneficial for novices, as they can help them survive repeated encounters with opponents.
Mei’s Blizzard special move creates an icy projectile that immobilizes foes within its vicinity for approximately 4.25 seconds. This ability can be employed both offensively, combined with other ultimates like D.Va’s Self Destruct, or defensively to grant teammates a brief respite for regrouping and healing when enemies are frozen solid. While Mei is capable of dealing significant damage, it’s her defensive abilities that make her an excellent pick for newcomers concerned about surviving their initial skirmishes.
4 Soldier 76
Run and Gun
- Abilities: Heavy Pulse Rifle, Sprint, Helix Rockets, and Biotic Field.
- Ultimate Ability: Tactical Visor
- English VA: Fred Tatasciore
In Overwatch 2, Soldier: 76 seems tailored for gamers transitioning from first-person shooter games like Call of Duty. Veteran players will find comfort in picking him due to his familiar feel, while newcomers can easily grasp his straightforward skill set. Soldier: 76 boasts impressive agility with his Sprint ability that increases speed by half when activated. Furthermore, his Biotic Field is an excellent beginner’s tool, as it not only helps in self-healing but also heals teammates within a 4.5-meter area.
In a typical first-person shooter (FPS) gameplay, Soldier 76 wields a standard automatic assault rifle known for its high damage potential. Even beginners in the FPS genre can land some kills with this weapon due to its ease of use and stability. The Helix Rockets that Soldier 76 can launch from his rifle don’t require pinpoint accuracy. They inflict direct hit damage as well as area-of-effect splash damage, but be cautious, as the impact can also harm players if they are near the affected zone.
1. The Tactical Visor of Soldier 76 is great for newcomers because it automatically focuses on enemies within sight and locks in, making aiming a breeze. For first-person shooter (FPS) players embarking on Overwatch 2 or beginners seeking a Damage hero with straightforward abilities, Soldier 76 is the ideal choice.
3 Bastion
Beep Boop
- Abilities: Configuration: Recon, Configuration: Assault, Reconfigure, Ironclad, A-36 Tactical Grenade.
- Ultimate Ability: Configuration: Artillery
- English VA: Chris Metzen
In the transition from Overwatch to Overwatch 2, Bastion has undergone numerous adjustments, but remains an excellent choice for beginners among the Damage heroes, due to his high damage potential. Apart from his ultimate skill, Bastion operates in two distinct modes: Recon and Assault. The Recon mode equips him with a submachine gun that discharges five rounds per second, which is his standard primary fire. His Assault mode can be activated by using the Reconfigure ability to switch between these two modes.
In Assault mode, players can experience a revamped version of Bastion from the original Overwatch, equipped with a rapid-fire cannon resembling a minigun. This version of Bastion has an endless supply of ammunition during this mode, but his speed is significantly reduced and the mode doesn’t last long. Despite its brevity, it offers plenty of opportunities for kills, especially when the opposing team is exposed without any cover. Since Bastion can be extremely dangerous in Assault mode, he will often become the main target. To keep him alive for more than a few moments, it’s essential to have a supportive team ready to shield him.
Apart from his regular arsenal, Bastion is equipped with an explosive device called the A-36 Tactical Grenade. Similar to Solider 76’s Helix Rockets, these grenades can inflict damage on the player if Bastion happens to be within the blast radius, so caution is advised. Moreover, this grenade sticks to enemies when Bastion hits them directly, allowing for strategic positioning.
The final configuration mode for Bastion is his Artillery mode, used for his ultimate ability. Bastion takes on a form similar to a mortar and launches three strong artillery shells into the air. The player controls where they land and can target whoever they please, such as grouped-up enemies or specifically targeted players (such as enemy healers). The main issue is that Bastion is immobile while using his ultimate, so he is incredibly vulnerable. Again, a strong, supportive team is a must. Bastion might need a lot of protection, and his general movement skills aren’t great, but his powerful artillery abilities are easy to use and can be a fun way for new players to start racking up kills.
2 Junkrat
Bombs Away
- Abilities: Frag Launcher, Total Mayhem, Steel Trap, Concussion Mine.
- Ultimate Ability: RIP-Tire
- English VA: Chris Parson
Junkrat is a character who adores his explosives. New players seeking a hero who doesn’t require pinpoint precision to excel, or simply want to watch things blow up, will find him enjoyable. Junkrat primarily uses his Frag Launcher, which fires off six grenades before requiring reloading. Each grenade deals 50 damage upon impact, making quick work of Damage and Support characters. Additionally, when Junkrat dies, he leaves behind grenades that can harm or even eliminate enemies in the vicinity.
In addition to his Frag Launcher, Junkrat also carries two explosive devices known as Concussion Mines. These mines can either be planted at a strategic spot where they’ll detonate when an enemy approaches, or they can be hurled directly at an enemy and explode instantly. The damage these mines inflict ranges from 120 to 155, often dealing fatal or heavy injuries to enemies.
Junkrat’s Steel Trap ability can ensnare opponents, causing them 100 points of damage and rendering them immobile for 2.5 seconds. This move synergizes effectively with his Concussion Mine, keeping adversaries pinned down long enough for teammates to finish them off or eliminate them instantly if they’re low on health. It’s best to place the trap discreetly to avoid tipping off enemies, but in intense fights, Junkrat can just toss it out anywhere and foes may not even notice it immediately.
Junkrat’s last trick up his sleeve is the notorious RIP-Tire, capable of annihilating numerous foes in a single blast. By cranking up his self-propelled explosive tire bomb, Junkrat guides it through the battlefield, either letting it explode on its own or detonating it when near enemies. While controlling the tire, Junkrat remains stationary and exposed to enemy attacks. The RIP tire has a distinctive whirring sound that alerts enemies to its presence, often causing them to seek cover. It can also be destroyed, so the optimal use is to position it close to a group of enemies – overhead if possible – for a surprise attack. Even if Junkrat doesn’t outright kill anyone with his ultimate, he can still induce fear and disarray among the enemy ranks, making them more susceptible to attack by allies.
1 Torbjörn
Fear The Beard
- Abilities: Rivet Gun, Rivet Gun Alt Fire, Forge Hammer, Overload, Deploy Turret.
- Ultimate Ability: Molten Core
- English VA: Keith Silverstein
Torbjörn serves as an outstanding choice for beginners starting their Overwatch 2 adventure due to his versatility, durability, and high damage output. The weapon he wields, known as the Rivet Gun, offers two firing modes: a potent but less accurate short-range blast, and a slower, more precise long-range shot. Newcomers can experiment with these options to determine which suits their playstyle best. In close-quarters combat, Torbjörn can switch to his Forge Hammer. Apart from inflicting damage, the hammer is also used to repair his deployed turret, a crucial aspect of Torbjörn’s skill set.
In numerous locations, Torbjörn can set up his automated defense tower, ready to fire at opponents from their preferred positions. If the enemies fail to locate and destroy it promptly, this turret can inflict significant damage, especially when Torbjörn repairs it during combat. Additionally, this turret aids in identifying harder-to-spot adversaries like Pharah in flight or Sombra hiding, as it locks onto them and indicates their direction.
In the heat of a tough battle, Torbjorn can temporarily enhance his vitality, strength, and speed for ten seconds through his Overdrive ability, which significantly shifts the game’s momentum. Often, adversaries underestimate Torb when he appears weakened, but they quickly learn their mistake as he springs into action with his Overdrive skill, turning the tables and vanquishing them.
Torbjorn’s ultimate ability is called Molten Core. When he uses this skill, he shoots pools of molten slag which ignite enemies and deal extra damage against armored opponents. This ability can be strategically useful as it can block off paths or areas, preventing enemies from advancing or trapping them. It’s easy to use but can be incredibly powerful, particularly in enclosed spaces. For those new to the game who want to enjoy some enjoyable gameplay without too much complexity, Torbjörn is an excellent choice for a Damage hero.
