As a gamer with over a decade of experience under my belt, I’ve seen the evolution of team-based shooters like no other. I remember the glory days of 6v6 in Overwatch, the classic dive comp, and the unstoppable Reinhardt-Zarya duo. But then came the shift to 5v5, a change that initially left me scratching my head.
In essence, while Overwatch 2 doesn’t appear to offer a massive leap in visuals and gameplay compared to its predecessor, it does introduce notable changes. The shift from a 6-player team to a 5-player team (5v5) is the most contentious alteration, with some players appreciating the faster match queues and gameplay. However, others argue that this change, which reduces the number of tank players from two to one, diminishes the game’s complexity. The 5v5 format has been the standard for competitive Overwatch over the past two years, supported by numerous hero and map updates. The end of 2024 will likely see how well this new format performs in
Since mid-2024, Blizzard’s top hero shooter, Overwatch 2, has been contemplating the return of the classic 6 versus 6 game mode as a main feature. In a detailed blog post published on July 25, Director Aaron Keller delved into the history of this format, explained the shift to 5 versus 5 for Overwatch 2, and hinted at the possibility of reintroducing 6 versus 6. If speculations from both the director and players prove correct, we might see this change come to life in Season 14, as suggested by Keller’s latest update. In preparation for this, Overwatch 2 will introduce two test modes based on the 6 versus 6 format, and developers are also planning significant balance adjustments exclusively for these modes.
- Min. 1, Max. 3: This is a looser version of role queue or a more restricted open queue, depending on one’s perspective. Each role must have at least one hero, but no more than three.
- Classic 2-2-2: This version of 6v6 will have role queues for the tried and tested two DPS, two tanks, and two supports.
5v5 VS. 6v6: How Season 14’s Tests Could Define Overwatch 2’s Competitive Future
Because Overwatch 2 initially introduced a 5v5 setup at its launch, many players have grown accustomed to this configuration. Switching back to an older gameplay format might bring about changes within the current player community, as such a move could offer both advantages and disadvantages.
The Case for 6v6’s Competitive Comeback
In simpler terms, one key benefit of the 6v6 format is recreating the traditional Overwatch (OW) feel, allowing players to re-experience the thrill of the original competitive play with heroes like Winston and D.Va. Additionally, veteran players appreciate the synergy between Reinhardt and Zarya as they can absorb a large amount of damage for their team by coordinating their shields effectively.
In the new 6-versus-6 format of Overwatch 2, it sidesteps issues encountered in its predecessor when it comes to having numerous tank characters on a single team. Given that both test modes necessitate at least one character for every role, constructing a complete GOATS (Gotterdammerung, Orisa, D.Va, and Sigma) composition becomes impossible. Whether a Ramattra and Sigma dual-shield team will slow the game down like Sigma and Orisa did before remains to be seen. However, this potential scenario is something that the 6v6 balance patches could rectify, as Keller mentioned they’ll reduce the survivability and power of tanks for these test modes.
Why 5v5 Should Stay in Overwatch 2
As an ardent fan, I must say that the transition to the 5v5 format for Overwatch 2 has been a game-changer! Compared to the previous version, this new setup addresses several challenges we faced. For instance, queue times have noticeably sped up because there are two fewer players involved in setting up a match.
The 6 versus 6 gaming era is at its peak, as the forthcoming hero shooter “Marvel Rivals” joins the trend. With its upcoming release and “Overwatch 2” testing Season 14 in December, these events might eclipse the 5 versus 5 format of “OW2”. Nevertheless, the recent Director’s Update suggests that both modes could persist long-term. Whether it’s adopting a 6v6 setup or offering both formats, this change promises an exciting twist for both casual and professional gamers alike.
