As a long-time fan of Overwatch and its vibrant community, I’ve seen the highs and lows this game has experienced since its inception. The shift to 5v5 was a contentious change, one that left a lingering taste of dissatisfaction among many veteran players like myself. So, when I heard about the return of 6v6 in Overwatch 2, it felt like a breath of fresh air. It’s not just about nostalgia; it’s about choice, flexibility, and the opportunity to experiment with different strategies.
Testing for 6-player team battles in Overwatch 2, a feature much sought after by fans, has commenced. The initial round of testing is currently underway, with additional tests planned for Overwatch 2 in the year 2025.
6v6 gameplay has been under consideration for Overwatch 2 for quite some time, and it’s not hard to understand why. Transitioning to 5v5 matches was one of the more debated decisions at launch, particularly given how different the original Overwatch was. While some veteran players appreciate the update, many miss the option to choose.
Explaining Overwatch 2’s 6v6 Tests
Instead of abandoning the format it once used, Blizzard is now experimenting with it again for Overwatch 2. There are two confirmed testing phases for this new 6v6 setup: one that’s ongoing and another scheduled for January 7th. The first test, already in progress, is Role Queue where players are paired into specific roles in teams of two. The upcoming test, Min 1, Max 3, will require 1-3 players per role at any given time. With the Overwatch: Classic mode offering a glimpse of 6v6 gameplay, fans are ready to contribute to the final decision making process.
December 17’s Ongoing 6v6 Test
Starting on December 17th, Overwatch 2 launched a 6v6 Role Queue experiment. This mode can be tested in the Unranked section of the game and will remain accessible until January 6th. The characters have undergone several adjustments to fit the new format, though these alterations are specific to this mode only. In essence, overall health and damage have been boosted, while armor has mostly decreased. Additionally, each character’s base regeneration timer has been extended from 5 seconds to 7 seconds.
As an ardent fan, I’m excited to share some insights from a recent blog post by Overwatch director Aaron Keller. He’s given us a peek into how the 6v6 tests for Overwatch 2 are progressing. Keller emphasizes that the upcoming 6v6 test will offer greater flexibility in hero selection, while maintaining a relatively balanced team composition. This focus on balance is crucial in determining whether this mode makes it to the final cut.
In the game Overwatch 2, the recent efforts at a 6v6 setup have garnered mixed responses, with most feedback leaning towards the positive. However, there’s been a fair share of worry regarding the balance adjustments introduced in the experimental mode, particularly concerning the Tank role. The Support class has also faced substantial criticism due to its updates and functionality within larger groups. It appears that overall, the new mode is being perceived as more chaotic, with some finding it exhilarating while others find it frustrating.
The Next Overwatch 2 Test Mode
In the ongoing test phase, a new 6vs6 trial is scheduled for Overwatch 2. This upcoming test period spans from January 21 to February next year and mirrors the Quick Play Hacked mode that Blizzard tested last season, as described by Keller. During this trial, certain roles might not be equally represented. The feedback received from fans on social media will matter significantly, but also crucial is how well these modes function behind the scenes. Given past issues with queue times and the increased turmoil caused by larger team sizes, backend functionality will be particularly important in making the final decision about this new mode.
