Just as numerous live-service games do, Blizzard has been diligent in keeping Overwatch 2 engaging and contemporary since its release in October 2022. The game has thrived due to regular additions such as new playable characters, stages, game modes, and seasonal activities. This constant flow of fresh content is crucial to counter the intense competition that hero shooters face within the gaming market.
Concerns persist about how far the delivery method of Overwatch 2 might stretch before some fans start waning in enthusiasm, given the significant attention other recent games like Marvel Rivals have been receiving. The excitement surrounding Overwatch 2 largely revolves around its reversion to the franchise’s original gameplay elements, but this focus could potentially dwindle as the title prepares for release. With Overwatch 2 needing to establish itself now more than ever, it may face its toughest challenge imminently.
Overwatch 2 Will Need to Deal With Some Huge Blows Over the Coming Days
In November, Overwatch 2 rolled out one of its most captivating updates in a while with the temporary debut of Overwatch Classic. This update aimed to replicate the distinctive metas and gameplay styles of the original Overwatch, even bringing back the early ability kits of the franchise’s initial heroes. Many popular multiplayer games have followed this path to considerable acclaim lately, like Fortnite’s classic mode, which has since become a permanent feature in the vast battle royale game.
Although Overwatch Classic isn’t a permanent fixture at this point, Blizzard is still keen on incorporating key aspects of the mode, particularly its team battles consisting of six players per side. Distinguishing itself from its predecessor, Overwatch 2 controversially opted for a change to 5v5 gameplay, a decision that has often dissuaded long-time fans from embracing the newer version of the franchise.
Due to the popularity of the original Overwatch game, Blizzard has been experimenting with 6vs6 gameplay as the primary mode for Overwatch 2. They’ve been doing this since December 17, specifically focusing on role queues in these tests. In this current phase of testing, each role is limited to two players, and it will end on January 7. It’s important to note that another round of 6vs6 testing for Overwatch 2 is planned from January 21 to February 4. During this test, the number of players per role will be more flexible, ranging from 1 to 3, although this could lead to a significant break in gameplay where Overwatch 2 might revert back to its controversial 5vs5 format.
Marvel Rivals Success Leaves No Resting Room For Overwatch 2
Currently, it’s crucial for Overwatch 2 to address player retention given the significant challenge posed by Marvel Rivals, another popular hero shooter. Despite Overwatch 2 outlasting other recent competitors like Concord, the allure and refined gameplay of Marvel Rivals present a direct competition that Overwatch 2 can’t afford to ignore.
The switch back to standard 5 vs 5 gameplay in Overwatch 2 might displease many veteran fans who appreciated the game’s unique twist, potentially putting the title in a precarious situation as Marvel Rivals gains traction with its post-launch content. Although Overwatch 2 has managed to make a strong case for its shift from its original form in 2022, the absence of 6 vs 6 testing could pose a significant hurdle that the game might encounter in years.
