In the time since Overwatch 2 debuted in October 2022, its recurring in-game seasons have successfully refreshed the core gameplay experience of the game. However, Blizzard is exploring additional strategies to enact significant changes and maintain player interest. One significant and contentious alteration that sets Overwatch 2 apart from its predecessor is the shift from 6v6 gameplay to 5v5, a move that has helped differentiate the sequel from the original title’s legacy.
Despite the fact that Overwatch 2 is now commonly associated with five versus five gameplay, Blizzard appears to be considering bringing back six versus six matches as a significant aspect of the franchise, with early trials for this type of matchmaking currently underway. Although it hasn’t been officially announced that Blizzard plans to integrate six versus six gameplay into Overwatch 2, the positive results and ongoing expansion of these playtesting sessions suggest a strong possibility for its future introduction.
Permanent 6v6 Modes in Overwatch 2 Seem Like a Sure Thing
Originally, the game Overwatch established its unique playstyle based on 6v6 encounters, without role queues until 2019. Surprisingly, when Overwatch 2 was released, it prioritized 5v5 matches instead, significantly altering the franchise’s meta by decreasing the number of tank positions per team from two to one. Despite the enduring popularity of the free-to-play Overwatch 2, Blizzard acknowledges and appreciates the fondness and nostalgia that longtime fans have for the original gameplay style of the franchise.
As a passionate gamer, I must say that the recent Overwatch Classic event for OW2 was an unforgettable journey down memory lane! From November 12 to December 2, we stepped back into the original gameplay of Overwatch 2, relishing in the nostalgia of older fans while offering newcomers a chance to grasp the roots of this iconic franchise.
The Overwatch Classic event didn’t just bring back 6v6 games; it also showcased the original 21 launch heroes with their authentic ability kits, giving us a taste of where it all began!
The classic version of Overwatch, which doesn’t impose hero limits, has been a profitable move for Blizzard. Although returning all heroes to their original abilities isn’t possible, it’s clear that they are open to making 6v6 games a regular feature. Starting on December 17, Blizzard started testing 6v6 matches outside of the classic version. This test included a role queue system where two players were assigned roles as Damage, Support, or Tank.
Overwatch 2’s 6v6 Testing Extension is an Excellent Sign For Fans of the Mode
Initially planned to conclude on January 7, the 6vs6 gameplay list was so well-received that Blizzard chose to prolong it temporarily as a separate arcade playlist. For now, this popular mode continues to run, but it will eventually be replaced by another phase of 6vs6 testing, which will emphasize a “minimum one, maximum three” hero selection strategy for each role. This extension suggests that Blizzard recognizes the potential for this mode to become permanent, and with Overwatch 2 on the horizon, such a move is more necessary than ever.
The swift emergence of Marvel Rivals presents a significant challenge to the ongoing prosperity of Overwatch 2, given its growing popularity. Moreover, the captivating allure of 6v6 gameplay appears too enticing for Blizzard Entertainment to ignore as Marvel Rivals progressively introduces seasonal content. This development, coupled with the extensive playtesting being conducted for 6v6 in Overwatch 2, suggests that this traditional style of gameplay could become a fundamental and integral part of the game’s future.
