Summary
- Overwatch 2 unveiled skin ideas that didn’t make it into the Street Fighter 6 collab.
- Some of the collab skins Overwatch 2 that didn’t make the cut included Ken Hanzo, Ken Genji, and Dee Jay Lucio.
- The Street Fighter 6 collab in Overwatch 2 is arriving May 20 and includes 8 skins.
In their latest update, Overwatch 2 unveiled some hero skin concepts that didn’t quite fit with the Street Fighter 6 collaboration. These included Hanzo as Ken, Genji as Ken, and Lucio as Dee Jay. Despite not being used in this particular crossover, Overwatch 2 remains open to the possibility of another collaboration with Street Fighter if the opportunity arises again.
The collaboration between Street Fighter 6 and Overwatch 2 is coming on May 20th. This collaboration will offer eight unique skins: Chun-Li for Juno, Ryu for Hanzo, Dhalsim for Zenyatta, M. Bison for Sigma, Juri for Kiriko, Cammy for Widowmaker, Blanka for Winston, and Guile for Soldier: 76. This crossover between Overwatch 2 and Street Fighter 6 marks the largest collaboration with an external IP that Blizzard has ever done.
Right before the event took place, Overwatch 2 disclosed additional details about the crossover, such as which Street Fighter characters didn’t make the cut. In an interview with ComicBook, Overwatch 2 art director Dion Rogers mentioned Ken as a character he wished could have been included in some way. “Ken might have been an amazing addition,” he said. “Perhaps a cool color scheme for Hanzo or at least explore Genji’s connection.” Since Ken is Ryu’s counterpart from the original Street Fighter, Genji Ken would have made a fitting opponent to battle against in the collaboration skin.
Could Overwatch 2 Do Another Street Fighter 6 Collab?
ComicBook mentioned that Dee Jay Lucio was a character fans enthusiastically supported when the partnership between Street Fighter 6 and Overwatch 2 was initially announced, as they saw similarities between the Jamaican dance music sensation of Street Fighter 6 and Overwatch 2’s Brazilian audio medic. Although this team-up wasn’t discussed at first, Rogers expressed that the idea “sounds amazing.” The art director further hinted that a possible second collaboration could happen someday, suggesting that such an event isn’t entirely out of the question in the future.
We’ll get there, maybe one day.
When it comes to partnerships involving Overwatch 2, Street Fighter appears to be a suitable choice. To bring this collaboration to life, Blizzard recruited Arnold Tsang – the art director of Azuki and a former team member on both Overwatch and Overwatch 2. Being a fan of Street Fighter, Tsang acknowledged the fighting game as a significant influence during the design phase of the original Overwatch. Interestingly, they found many parallels in world-building, with both games showcasing characters hailing from various nations and corresponding maps. Although they had to be selective for this collaboration, Tsang humorously pointed out that there’s a vast array of characters in both games, enough to create Street Fighter skins for almost every hero in Overwatch.
It’s worth mentioning that this collaboration between Blizzard and FPS (First-Person Shooter) is not only their largest crossover ever but also one of the fastest. The Overwatch 2 team has managed to launch the Street Fighter crossover in less than half the time it typically takes for such events following the completion of the Gundam Wing collaboration just last month. This speedier schedule is due to Overwatch 2 improving its ability to coordinate collaborations, although two crossovers per season isn’t likely to become standard. Despite their eagerness to make it happen, Rogers stated, “If we can, we’ll do it. We’ll try.
