Overwatch 2's My Hero Academia Crossover is One of Its Best Yet

Key Takeaways

  • Overwatch 2’s crossover with My Hero Academia offers impressive skins, challenges, and bundles.
  • Players can purchase individual skins or opt for a discounted mega bundle until October 30.
  • While the prices for skins and bundles may be high, the content and quality of the crossover collab may be worth it to hardcore MHA fans.

As a die-hard fan of both Overwatch and My Hero Academia, I must say that this crossover has truly been a dream come true for me! The skins are amazingly well-designed, capturing the essence of each character perfectly. However, as much as I love these cosmetics, I can’t help but feel a bit let down by the price tag.

In my enthusiasm as a dedicated fan, let me share some exciting news! Originally, Overwatch didn’t feature any crossover skins, but that changed drastically with the arrival of Overwatch 2. Since its launch, Overwatch 2 has been enriching its universe with content inspired by various popular franchises such as Cowboy Bebop, Diablo, LE SSERAFIM, LEGO, One Punch Man, Porsche, StarCraft, Transformers, Warcraft, and more recently, the sensational anime/manga series, My Hero Academia. While not all Overwatch 2 crossover skins have left me spellbound, I must say that the My Hero Academia collaboration is undeniably one of the best collaborations the hero-shooter has pulled off so far!

The collaboration between “Overwatch 2” and “My Hero Academia” is now active in the game and will continue until October 30th. During this period, players of “Overwatch 2” can buy skins based on “My Hero Academia” from the store. Characters like Deku Tracer, Uravity Juno, All Might Reinhardt, Shigaraki Reaper, and Toga Kiriko are available for individual purchase or as a set. Additionally, players can unlock free sprays by completing special challenges related to “My Hero Academia”.

From the jump, I have been hugely impressed with the Overwatch 2 My Hero Academia skins. I found the One Punch Man and Cowboy Bebop skins to be somewhat lacking, but the My Hero Academia collab is much like the Transformers crossover in that it does a great job of capturing the unique likeness of the licensed characters while the heroes remain firmly recognizable as who they’re supposed to be in-game. It also helps that with My Hero Academia still airing new episodes and having a new movie in theaters, it feels a bit more culturally relevant than the previous anime crossover events.

In the realm of gaming, the collaboration between Overwatch 2 and My Hero Academia offers exceptional skins, but that’s merely the beginning. For those eager to delve deeper, investing in the My Hero Academia Mega Pack at a cost of 5,700 Overwatch Coins ($49.99) unveils a treasure trove of extra content. This bonus material includes captivating voice lines inspired by the anime/manga, entertaining emotes, intriguing highlight intros, and much more. Regarding cosmetic bundles, the Overwatch 2 x My Hero Academia Mega Pack offers an impressive value for money.

In essence, despite the abundance of content offered at $49.99, it’s important to acknowledge that this amount could buy a whole game instead of just cosmetics for a free-to-play live-service title like Overwatch 2. The individual My Hero Academia skins cost roughly $20 each, which is a significant sum for cosmetic items. Compared to past Overwatch 2 crossovers, the bundle does offer good value, but these prices remain excessively high.

It’s a pity that there isn’t a voice line for characters to shout “SMASH!” like Deku and All Might do during their powerful attacks. Some fans believe this line was intended to replace Reinhardt’s “HAMMER DOWN!” Ultimate call, due to a bug that made it seem like the All Might skin was silent when using his Ult. It’s surprising that if this theory is correct, this issue hasn’t been fixed yet. Although All Might Reinhardt does say “Texas Smash!” in his Highlight Intro, it doesn’t have the same impact.

Although the Overwatch 2 x My Hero Academia collaboration isn’t flawless, it’s undeniably one of the most impressive crossovers the hero shooter has produced thus far. I was equally thrilled by the Transformers collaboration from the previous season, and these crossover events seem to be picking up steam. I can hardly contain my excitement for what’s coming next, especially if Overwatch 2 Season 14 is planning a crossover event of its own.
