In the course of Season 16, Overwatch 2 welcomed its 43rd playable character – Freja, a bounty hunter armed with a crossbow and previously an agent of Overwatch’s search and rescue team. This newcomer has been largely appreciated by those who enjoy the game’s lore and players alike. Although Blizzard already showed fans a sneak peek of hero 44 during Overwatch’s Spotlight event back in February, the recent hints about hero 45 have generated more curiosity than clarification.
Ever since Mauga debuted during Season 8, the pattern for introducing heroes has been tank, damage, and support. Interestingly, prior to this, Overwatch 2 introduced two support characters, Lifeweaver and Illari, in quick succession to bolster the support roster a bit more. It’s worth mentioning that following Freja’s release, Aqua (the upcoming support hero) is scheduled for Season 18. However, no information has been provided yet on whether Hero 45 will belong to any specific category.
Overwatch 2 Is Already Teasing Another Hero, But One Massive Question Remains
Details on Hero 45 Remain Scarce
Before Season 16, there were only a few hints about who Hero 45 could be. During the Spotlight event, as Senior Narrative Designer Jude Stacey was introducing Freja, Twitch streamer and Overwatch content creator ChristalRaine spotted a sketch of a character in armor brandishing a large sword. This sketch seemed to be a deliberate hint left by Team 4, much like the developer doodles of Mauga shown at BlizzCon 2023. Later, fans also discovered mysterious text on Brigitte’s hero page that read “Gladiators Gonna Gladiate,” which some believe is a cryptic clue about Hero 45’s identity.
Following the debut of Stadium mode in Overwatch 2, a clearer clue was uncovered on the Arena Victoriae control map. Sharp-eyed enthusiasts discovered a silhouette with a modern weapon, either a sword or spear, accompanied by Roman numeral XLV (45). Beneath this, the words “La Lupa della Ritorsione” were visible, which means “The Wolf of Retaliation” in Italian. Other possible translations could be “The Wolf of Retribution” or “The She-Wolf of Retribution.
Initially, players speculated that Blizzard might make Magnus from the Hall of Champions a playable hero on Colosseo, as gladiatorial combatants. However, the term “La Lupa della Ritorsione” seems to imply a female character, which contradicts this assumption. Moreover, the silhouette appears dissimilar to Camilla, Titus, or Magnus, implying a fresh character altogether. Although it’s likely that hero 45 will be melee-based due to comments from game director Aaron Keller hinting at Team 4 exploring this type of hero and addressing challenges in introducing such a hero in a primarily first-person game.
Setting Identity Aside, What Role Will Overwatch 2’s Next Hero Play?
There’s a lot of buzz about hero 45 for Overwatch 2 in 2025, with people wondering which category it will belong to. Given that Aqua is set to be the next support character, it seems doubtful that Blizzard would introduce another support hero so quickly. However, it’s important to note that they have done this before. What’s more intriguing is that a sword-wielding support might not fit conventionally, but characters like Brigitte with her melee mace and shield prove otherwise. Nevertheless, it’s worth mentioning that the support team already has a close-range character in Brigitte, and experienced Overwatch players know that she can be tricky to balance within the game’s meta.
Since Freja debuted during Season 16, there’s a chance that hero number 45 could fall under the damage class by the time Season 20 arrives. Many players have been eagerly awaiting a close-combat melee hero, so it’s not unreasonable to speculate. However, if Blizzard decides to adhere to the pattern set in Season 8, there’s also a good chance that this new hero will be a tank. Fingers crossed that as the release date approaches, Team 4 continues to drop hints for fans to decipher.
