Overwatch Confirms Reworks for Sombra, Lifeweaver, and Roadhog

Okay, so Overwatch just announced they’re giving some heroes major overhauls this year, and it’s starting with Sombra, Lifeweaver, and Roadhog. Apparently, they’re trying to make sure all the heroes feel fresh and useful without making them too complicated or super specific in what they do. It sounds like they want to keep things interesting and make sure no hero feels left behind.

2026 has been a massive year for Overwatch. The game simplified its name, added five new playable characters (with another coming soon), launched its first ongoing story arc, and updated its user interface. These changes led to record numbers of players on Steam. Developers have also suggested that several characters might receive significant updates later in the year.

Overwatch Confirms Multiple Hero Reworks for 2026

Blizzard has officially announced plans to update several heroes in Overwatch this year. In a recent blog post, Game Director Aaron Keller shared a general timeline and revealed that Sombra, Lifeweaver, and Roadhog will be the first to receive significant changes to their abilities. While the total number of hero reworks wasn’t specified, these three are confirmed to be prioritized.

Players familiar with Overwatch 2 won’t be shocked to see these three heroes mentioned, as each of them has been significantly updated or changed at least once before.

  • Sombra
    • Reworked in Overwatch 2 Season 7
      • Hack cancels Stealth when used on an enemy hero
      • Translocator automatically activates after being thrown
      • Virus: new projectile ability that deals damage over time, faster against hacked targets
      • Opportunist passive removed
    • Reworked again in Overwatch 2 Season 13
      • Stealth triggers for a short time upon using Translocator, rather than as a passive
      • Opportunist passive added back in
  • Lifeweaver
    • Shortly after release
      • Parting Gift passive removed
      • Healing Blossom and Thorn Volley made primary and secondary fire, respectively, instead of separate weapons
  • Roadhog
    • Reworked during Overwatch 2 Season 7
      • Scrap Gun secondary fire removed, primary fire combined both old primary and secondary fire
      • Take a Breather now uses a resource, moved to secondary fire
      • Pig Pen: new trap ability that dealt damage and slowed nearby enemies when triggered
    • Reworked again in Overwatch 2 Season 18
      • Scrap Gun reverted to pre-rework state
      • Take a Breather moved back to Ability 2, but keeps resource meter
      • Pig Pen removed

Three heroes in Overwatch haven’t been performing well lately, either because they’re too strong, too weak, or just unpleasant to play against. However, these changes are just the beginning, with more hero reworks planned for 2026. According to Keller, the team is looking at heroes with very specific playstyles, or those who haven’t changed much over time and don’t feel as exciting as newer heroes. The goal is to make these heroes versatile and easy to pick up, giving players more meaningful choices. We’ll probably find out which other heroes are getting reworked after Season 3.

Although these specific changes won’t be in Season 2, the update will still include a lot of other improvements. Some of the most popular perks are now built directly into hero abilities in Overwatch Season 2, like Mercy’s quick healing, Reaper’s increased damage, and Pharah’s improved movement. Players can try out these new abilities and the perks that replace them when Overwatch Season 2 launches on April 14th.
