  • Overwatch 2 is considering testing 6v6 matches and potentially revisiting 7v7 in the future.
  • Fans are divided on the idea of 7v7 matches in Overwatch 2, but are intrigued by the possibilities.

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel nostalgic when I hear about the potential return of larger team compositions in Overwatch 2. Remembering the chaos and excitement of those early Overwatch tests with 7v7 teams brings back memories of late-night LAN parties and frantic voice chats filled with strategic calls and laughter.

Initially, the classic version of “Overwatch” almost featured teams of seven players instead of five or six. Despite being considered overly chaotic back then, it’s possible that “Overwatch” could have employed a 7v7 setup as its standard team configuration. Revisiting these larger-scale matches isn’t completely out of the question in the future.

In their latest podcast episode titled Group Up!, content creators SVB and Flats sat down with game director Aaron Keller and lead hero designer Alec Dawson from Overwatch 2. A significant part of their discussion revolved around the possibility of reintroducing 6v6 team setups in the upcoming sequel shooter, as Keller had recently hinted at testing this format in Overwatch 2.

Initially, it appears that the original version of Overwatch was considering teams larger than the current six-player format. In an interview, Keller disclosed that early tests featured seven players per team instead of the six launched with. Although player feedback suggested matches felt overwhelming due to attacks coming from all directions simultaneously, Keller hinted that the decision could change in time, suggesting that Overwatch 2 might consider revisiting a 7v7 format at some point in the future.

Overwatch Almost Had 7v7

As a passionate Overwatch fan, I’ve been closely following the buzz surrounding the team sizes in Overwatch 2. One significant shift from the original Overwatch is the removal of the second tank hero spot, transitioning the game from 6v6 to 5v5. This change has placed an immense burden on tanks in Overwatch 2, making it challenging to balance them without tipping the scale towards overpowered or underutilized heroes. However, I’m relieved to know that Keller has acknowledged this issue and shared that Overwatch 2 is considering conducting future game tests, possibly including a reintroduction of the 6v6 format in some capacity.

As an ardent Overwatch fan, I’m thrilled about the rumored comeback of 6v6 in Overwatch 2. However, the suggestion of a 7v7 format has left fans divided. On one hand, it promises epic battles that would undoubtedly be intense. On the other, with 14 heroes battling simultaneously, it’s hard to ignore the potential chaos. Regardless of whether we’re intrigued or apprehensive, most of us are eager to witness a 7v7 game in action when Overwatch 2 arrives.

“As circumstances evolve, the best choices might shift. For instance, perhaps the game mode ‘7v7 in Overwatch 2’ is worth reconsidering down the line?”

Discussions over whether to alter the current 5v5 format in Overwatch 2 aren’t expected to end anytime soon, but it’s encouraging to see the game making bold moves by testing different approaches based on player input. Exciting changes and experiments related to Overwatch 2 are anticipated once Season 12 begins on August 20.
