Jeff Kaplan, a key creator of Overwatch, recently revealed his pick for the greatest video game of all time: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Released in 2017 alongside the Nintendo Switch, Breath of the Wild was a huge hit, receiving rave reviews and becoming the best-selling Zelda game ever. The game reinvented the series with a massive, open world, while still honoring the classic Zelda experience.
Even nine years after it first came out, the game remains popular with new players. In 2025, an updated version of Zelda: Breath of the Wild launched on the Nintendo Switch 2, featuring smoother gameplay, better graphics and faster loading times. It also included a new feature called Zelda Notes, with unique audio recordings performed by actress Patricia Summersett. The sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, received a similar upgrade.
Why Breath of the Wild is Kaplan’s Pick for Best Game Ever
During a conversation on the Lex Fridman Podcast, Jeff Kaplan, a co-creator of Overwatch, praised The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as the best video game ever made. He explained that the game’s world feels incredibly interactive, responding to the player’s actions exactly as they would expect. While acknowledging the difficulty Nintendo faces in surpassing Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, Kaplan previously considered Ocarina of Time a masterpiece and was surprised Nintendo managed to create something even better. Ultimately, Kaplan expressed strong confidence in Nintendo’s ability to consistently deliver high-quality games, saying he expects anything they release to be excellent.

With the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda coming up in 2026, many fans are wondering what Nintendo has planned for the future of the series after Tears of the Kingdom. While Nintendo hasn’t announced anything yet, they are currently celebrating the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. and the 30th anniversary of Pokemon. They might wait to reveal Zelda plans later in the year, possibly including news about a new game. It’s likely too soon to expect a completely new 3D Zelda game so soon after Tears of the Kingdom, but a spin-off or remake is definitely possible. Many fans are hoping Nintendo will finally bring the Wii U remasters of The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess to the Switch, and the anniversary would be a great opportunity to do just that.
While Kaplan loves Zelda: Breath of the Wild, many gamers would argue that Overwatch is one of the all-time greatest video games. Released in 2016 to rave reviews, Overwatch quickly gained a large and dedicated fanbase. A big part of this enthusiasm comes from the game’s iconic characters, like Tracer, Mei, and Torbjorn, who have inspired countless cosplayers and artists over the past decade. Ultimately, deciding the “greatest game ever” is a matter of opinion, and players will naturally have their own preferences. There’s no single right answer, and those opinions will likely evolve as new games come out.
