Overwatch Fan Makes Funny Discovery at Store

Highlights

  • One Overwatch fan found a Nintendo Switch copy of the first game for sale at almost full price.
  • Following the release of Overwatch 2, the Overwatch servers were taken down, rendering the first game unplayable.
  • Some fans are amused by the find, but others are frustrated, noting that someone may purchase it without knowing that it can’t be played.

As a seasoned Overwatch gamer with countless hours spent on the battlefield, I find myself utterly astounded by this recent discovery of a Nintendo Switch copy of the original Overwatch game being sold for nearly full price. It’s like stumbling upon a cassette tape of Nirvana’s Nevermind in a record store in 2023!

A devoted fan of Overwatch stumbled upon an intriguing find during their shopping spree – a copy of the initial game available on Nintendo Switch. Given that the original game is no longer playable, the astonishment, frustration, and humor among the Overwatch online community ensued when they realized that stores were still selling it for money.

Back in 2016, Overwatch debuted and swiftly climbed its way up as one of the most prominent hero shooters in the gaming world, opening doors for similar competitive games such as Valorant. However, when Overwatch 2 dropped in 2022, it made substantial changes to the original Overwatch gameplay mechanics, effectively rendering the first game obsolete following the sequel’s release.

Sharing an image of a physical copy of the original Overwatch game on Reddit by user tenko_chabashira ignited laughter and annoyance in the official Overwatch 2 subreddit. The majority were puzzled that the game was still available for sale, considering it’s unplayable, while some expressed concern that naive customers might buy it unwittingly.

Overwatch Fan Finds A Useless Copy Of The First Game For Nearly Full Price

The user inquired about potential outcomes if they bought the game, sparking conversations about its worth as it was a Legendary Edition featuring complimentary skins. Some commenters suggested that trying to install the game might prompt the player to install the sequel instead, but would presumably grant access to all the characters from the initial game immediately due to how Overwatch 2 usually requires newcomers to gradually unlock these heroes.

Based on the label on the game box, the shop is offering the game at 179 AED, which is almost equivalent to 50 US dollars. This suggests that the store is selling an apparently unplayable game close to its original price. Interestingly, even special editions of the initial Overwatch were found to be sold for significantly lower prices during the game’s later phases. Given that Overwatch 2 is free to play, it seems rather unusual for the shop to sell the game at all, let alone for almost its full price.

The user who first posted this information also verified that the game in question doesn’t come with a traditional game cartridge. Instead, you receive a download code. Unfortunately, it seems that this code can no longer be used. It’s interesting to note that the game appears to come with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription code as well. However, considering that a year-long subscription costs just $20, the value of the game may not justify the purchase if you already have an active subscription or don’t plan on using the online features extensively.
