In the wake of the confirmation that Mass Effect 4 is being developed and with hints suggesting ties to the initial series, fan anticipation has never been higher. As promotional content fuels this excitement, it seems the game’s allure is rooted in nostalgia and a longing for an altered ME3 ending. Many are even wishing for the return of Commander Shepard, which feels almost inevitable given his significance to the franchise. However, it’s challenging to envision Mass Effect without Commander Shepard, so these aspirations can be understood. Still, every saga must reach its conclusion. Relying too much on the past could hinder the series’ progression. Despite its depth, the original trilogy’s narrative had a clear ending, and Shepard’s journey was completed, regardless of whether it was controversial or not. Prolonging that storyline might dilute its impact. Overemphasis could lead to a weaker version of Mass Effect 4, one that fails to meet the originality of the trilogy it draws inspiration from.
