Minecraft Movie Shatters Box Office Records Worldwide

Ever since its public alpha version was introduced online in May 2009, the game known as Minecraft has swept across the gaming landscape. Five years following its debut, Microsoft acquired Mojang Studios, the Swedish developers responsible for its creation, along with the Minecraft intellectual property, for a staggering $2.5 billion. In retrospect, this seems like a small sum given that current figures show 170 million people play the game monthly. This sandbox survival/creation game holds the title as the best-selling video game ever made and has expanded into a multimedia empire, encompassing various spin-offs such as Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Legends, merchandise ranging from lunch boxes to actual LEGO sets. Despite Warner Bros. taking over a decade to bring A Minecraft Story out of production limbo and onto the big screen, their investment in the franchise has undeniably been worthwhile.
