Great hard science fiction films are known for their realistic portrayals of space travel, intelligent stories about artificial intelligence, and deep dives into big ideas like fate versus free will. Filmmakers like Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan have created some of the most memorable examples, and with Denis Villeneuve planning a new movie based on Rendezvous with Rama, it’s a fantastic time to revisit—or discover—the best hard sci-fi has to offer.

As a huge fan of Malcolm in the Middle, I was surprised to learn Per Sullivan, who played Stevie, isn’t returning for the revival! I heard he’s been retired from acting for over 15 years – his last role was in a movie called Twelve back in 2010 – and apparently turned down some really good offers to come back. It’s awesome to see Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, Christopher Masterson, Justin Berfield, and Emy Coligado all reprising their roles, though. They’re bringing back the whole family, plus some new characters and, unfortunately, they’ve had to recast Per Sullivan’s part.

Sengoku used to be the highest-ranking officer in the Marines, known as the Fleet Admiral, but he’s now retired and past his peak. Despite this, he remains a formidable fighter, largely due to his Devil Fruit power, the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Daibutsu. This allows him to transform into a massive golden Buddha and generate incredibly strong shock waves with his hands.

This season, The Rookie has adjusted its release schedule, leaving some viewers unsure when new episodes of Season 8 will air. With only three episodes remaining, fans will be happy to know that ABC has already renewed the show for Season 9, which is planned to premiere in January 2027.
