Palworld PS5 Version Finally Releases in Region It Initially Skipped

Key Takeaways

  • Palword launches on PS5 in Japan after skipping the region with its initial launch.
  • Legal pressure from Nintendo has been speculated as the reason for the delayed Japanese release.
  • Pocketpair is determined to expand Palworld to new platforms like mobile, despite its legal battle with Nintendo.

As a long-time fan of unique and immersive gaming experiences, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and curiosity about the latest developments surrounding Palworld. Having followed its journey since its Early Access launch earlier this year, it’s fascinating to see how the game has navigated through legal battles and regional releases.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that my beloved game, Palword, has finally made its way to PlayStation 5 in Japan! There were whispers that the delay in the PS5 release of Palworld might be due to some legal pressure from Nintendo, but it’s now clear that those rumors were just that – rumors. The game is now officially available for players in Japan to enjoy!

Initially released on PC and Xbox Series X|S in January through Early Access, the game “Palworld” was secretly launched for PlayStation 5 on September 24. This unexpected announcement expanded the availability of the game’s survival-crafting and monster-catching mechanics to a potential player base across 68 countries and regions worldwide, which could prolong the game’s lifespan as initial high player numbers began to decline swiftly after its early release.

Initially, the debut of Palworld on PlayStation 5 bypassed Japan without a clear reason provided by Pocketpair. They initially apologized to their Japanese fans and promised to make the game available on PS5 for the region as soon as feasible. While there hasn’t been much excitement about this news from the global social media team, on October 4, the game’s official Japanese Twitter account announced that it is now accessible on the PlayStation Store in Japan.

Palworld on PS5 Releases in Japan Amid Legal Battle with Nintendo

It’s been cryptic why Pocketpair has been silent on the cause of the delayed Japanese release, but there’s widespread speculation among fans that Nintendo and other Pokemon franchise owners might have applied pressure due to potential copyright infringements. On September 18th, Nintendo filed a civil lawsuit against Palworld’s developer, claiming they violated several patent rights and seeking compensation for the alleged violations, along with an order to halt any further infringing actions. Japanese patent lawyer Kiyoshi Kurihara pointed out 28 potential patents that Nintendo could potentially use against Pocketpair. Although Kurihara believes there’s enough uniqueness between Pokemon and Pals to dodge legal issues, similarities in some mechanics like capturing creatures with either a Poke Ball or Pal Sphere might lead to legal consequences.

Regardless of the ongoing lawsuit, it appears that Pocketpair is resolute about rolling out Palworld on additional platforms. Just recently, South Korean publisher Krafton disclosed a deal with Pocketpair to bring Palworld to mobile devices. As of now, there’s no set timeline for when players can access the mobile version, but John “Bucky” Buckley, Pocketpair’s global community manager, has made it clear that Nintendo’s legal action won’t make them change their plans for upcoming launches.
