As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can tell you that the news about Palworld not becoming a free-to-play or live-service game is music to my ears. I’ve seen too many games succumb to the pressures of the ‘games-as-a-service’ model, losing their soul in the process.
There’s been talk lately about whether Palworld might transition into a live-service game, as PocketPair seems to be considering a free-to-play business model. This conversation was sparked by remarks from the CEO hinting that the game’s future is still undecided at this point.
On the contrary, the team at PocketPair made it clear earlier today that Palworld will not transition into a free-to-play or live-service format.
Definitive Statement
Yesterday’s conversation about Palworld transitioning into a ‘games-as-a-service’ model has been put to rest, as it appears that those discussions were primarily based on an interview conducted several months ago when PocketPair was still in the early stages of developing Palworld and hadn’t fully determined the game’s future plans.
In a post on social media, the team said:
At that moment, we were pondering over the optimal strategy for Palworld’s development, aiming to build a game with lasting appeal and growth potential. We’re still brainstorming this within our team, as it’s tricky to pinpoint the perfect route, but we’ve already made up our minds that the Free-to-Play/Game-as-a-Service approach doesn’t align with our plans.
In its current form, Palworld wasn’t intended to be compatible with that specific model, making an adjustment excessively laborious. Moreover, it’s crucial for us to prioritize our players’ preferences, and this modification doesn’t align with their desires.
Later on, it was pointed out that PocketPair plans to regularly update Palword with fresh skins and DLC packages as a way to fund development. For the time being, the game will continue to be a purchase-to-play title, which isn’t necessarily a disadvantage. This news was met with enthusiasm from many fans in the comments section of the related Twitter post.
How do you feel about Palworld? Would you prefer it to be a live-service game, or are you content with its current buy-to-play model?
