Summary
- Paradox Interactive has acquired Haemimont Games, known for simulation and city-building titles like Surviving Mars.
- The acquisition will not disrupt Haemimont Games’ ongoing projects and will strengthen Paradox’s creative potential.
- Despite setbacks like shutting down Tectonic studio and issuing refunds, Paradox has a strong game catalog to build upon.
The Swedish gaming company, Paradox Interactive, recently took over the development studio, Haemimont Games. Originally, Haemimont was a part of Target Games’ video game division and later joined Paradox Entertainment. However, it broke away as an independent studio in 2004. Since its beginning, Paradox Interactive aimed to become a top-tier (AAA) game developer, which it has now accomplished with several successful game releases under its belt.
Primarily recognized for its grand strategy games, Paradox Interactive boasts a robust collection of highly-acclaimed titles including Stellaris, Europa Universalis 4, and Hearts of Iron 4. Notably, they are also the creators of Crusader Kings 3, often praised by fans as one of the best kingdom building games ever made. Yet, Paradox’s portfolio is not confined to strategy; it encompasses popular simulation games like Cities: Skylines and action RPGs such as Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2.
Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive, shared on Twitter that Haemimont Games has now become part of the Paradox Studio Group as a fully owned affiliate. In his tweet, he commended Haemimont’s impressive body of work, reminisced about their previous partnerships, and expressed enthusiasm for the innovative projects that will stem from this acquisition.
Paradox Interactive Purchases Haemimont Games
The acquisition ensures that Haemimont Games continues to lead, without interfering with any current projects they have going on. Known for its expertise in simulation and city-building games, Haemimont Studios complements Paradox Interactive’s existing portfolio well. Notably, the game “Surviving Mars,” a popular city-building simulation title, was jointly developed by Haemimont Games and published by Paradox in 2018. Given their past cooperative efforts and shared interests in similar genres, this acquisition seems like a logical match.
In the year 2024, Paradox Interactive officially closed its Tectonic studio, which had been working on the much-awaited life simulation game titled “Life by You.” The company explained that the project, positioned as a competitor for EA’s “The Sims,” fell short of expectations. This decision was made following a series of events, including the necessity to offer refunds for the DLC of “Cities: Skylines 2” due to a surge of unfavorable reviews upon its release. After this incident, the developer acknowledged that the DLC was not yet prepared for launch.
Overcoming these obstacles, Paradox Interactive boasts a robust library of games to expand upon in their future endeavors. The acquisition adds an expert team with proficient backgrounds in comparable genres, enhancing the company’s creative prowess. For enthusiasts of both Paradox and Haemimont Games, this merger may usher in a new era of captivating simulation and grand strategy titles.
