So, I’ve been following the drama around Build a Rocket Boy, the studio behind Mindseye, and it’s pretty rough. Apparently, almost 100 current and former employees have signed a letter detailing what they say has been years of disrespect and mistreatment within the company. It’s a serious situation, and a lot of people are speaking out about their experiences.
The IWGB Game Workers released a letter on Friday detailing employee concerns about management, specifically naming founder Leslie Benzies, and outlining several issues they’ve reportedly experienced.
Following the disappointing release of Mindseye, Build a Rocket Boy reportedly laid off between 250 and 300 employees. The union claims the layoffs were due to the company’s unwillingness to value the expertise and insights of its workers, which they believe contributed to a disastrous game launch.
The letter states a problem with how information was shared and how openly decisions were made. Employees feel they weren’t given enough clear details, and that significant changes to their work were often made without their feedback or involvement.
The letter details that the studio required all employees to work an extra eight hours of overtime each week for the four months before the game launched. While staff were given seven hours of compensatory time off for every eight hours of overtime, many haven’t been able to take it, due to ongoing requests for urgent work, even after the game was released.
The letter strongly criticizes the way recent layoffs were managed, calling it a disaster. It claims employees received inaccurate information – including being assigned to the wrong departments and given incorrect notice periods – which may have led to some being unfairly let go.
Current and former employees are calling for a public apology and fair compensation for those who lost their jobs. They also want the company to take concrete steps to improve working conditions, including officially recognizing the IWGB union. They’re asking for a commitment to involve external resources in any future layoffs and to allow employees who have received redundancy notices to either finish working their notice period or receive immediate payment in lieu of notice.
The letter ends by directly addressing Benzies and co-CEO Mark Gerhard, questioning their use of the term ‘family’ to describe their employees and asking if their actions truly reflect familial treatment.
TopMob has contacted Build a Rocket Boy for a statement about the letter. We will update this article if we receive one.
