Patent Shows Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Used As Wireless Mouse

It looks like the hinted wireless mouse functionality for the updated Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons could be more substantial than initially thought. A recent patent, complete with illustrations, seems to shed light on this feature and how it might work.

The patent explains that the Joy-Con’s design includes a “light-sensing device” which tracks changes in reflected light when one of its sides is placed on a surface and moved around.

The sensor can be found at the bottom side of the Joy-Con – referenced as callout 170 in the enclosed images. From the pictures, it seems that gamers may utilize one Joy-Con like a computer mouse while continuing to use the other conventionally.

You can see the patent drawings depicting the feature below (click the image to enlarge).

Further information regarding the novel application of Joy-Con remains undisclosed at this time. Nonetheless, it’s reasonable to expect that Nintendo will provide additional insights during their Nintendo Switch 2 presentation scheduled for April 2nd. During this event, they are likely to share comprehensive details about the console, including technical specifications and the initial lineup of games. It is also expected that they will announce the pricing and release date.
