Path of Exile 2 Early Access Review

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must say that diving into the world of Path of Exile 2 has been nothing short of exhilarating! The game’s intricate mechanics, immersive visuals, and unparalleled player power have left me utterly captivated.

For approximately ten years now, Grinding Gear Games has been the developer behind the popular Action Role-Playing Game (ARPG), Path of Exile. Over time, numerous other ARPGs have emerged with the intention of surpassing it. Now, what was initially envisioned as an expansion for the original game, Path of Exile 2, has arrived. This sequel is making significant strides to be more accessible for new players without sacrificing its complexity. Though it retains its core essence, Path of Exile 2 is adopting features characteristic of contemporary ARPGs in an effort to hold its own in the competitive landscape, even though it debuted in an early access stage.

Instead of merely building upon its original version, Path of Exile 2 aims to elevate its combat system by adopting a more strategic and challenging approach similar to Soulslike games. Its merciless difficulty necessitates careful planning and vigilance, offering an unmatched feeling of achievement rarely found in Action Role-Playing Games (ARPGs). Coupled with stunning visuals, captivating exploration, and an extensive endgame teeming with possibilities, Path of Exile 2 isn’t just raising the bar for ARPGs; it has the potential to redefine what the genre is capable of. After investing more than 50 hours into Path of Exile 2, I believe I’ve barely scratched the surface of what could evolve into one of the greatest ARPGs ever created, and it’s still in early access.

Path of Exile 2 Visually and Mechanically Raises the Bar for ARPG Gameplay

Path of Exile 2’s Best Quality Is Complete and Total Freedom

One distinctive feature that sets Path of Exile apart has always been its extensive player freedom, stemming from its unrestricted customization. Beyond being recognized for boasting one of the most expansive passive skill trees in any Action Role-Playing Game (ARPG), it also grants players an unrivaled chance to shape a build tailored to their preferences, as it doesn’t confine them to a particular class. The upcoming Path of Exile 2 retains this characteristic, although adjustments have been made to the overall system to make it more approachable for novice players.

In the early access phase of Path of Exile 2, there are currently six character classes to choose from: Sorceress, Warrior, Ranger, Witch, Mercenary, and Monk. Additionally, six more classes will be introduced later on. With this variety already available, players have numerous playstyle options, and the upcoming additions will further expand customization possibilities. During my trial run of Path of Exile 2, I primarily played as a Monk, but I also tried out a Sorceress in the early access demo, and it was equally enjoyable.

In Path of Exile 2, players can acquire Skill Gems by finishing quests or defeating bosses, which they then use to unlock fresh abilities for their characters. On the other hand, Support Gems are employed to customize and boost these skills, causing them to function in various ways. For example, the Frostbolt skill of the Sorceress fires a single projectile without any Support Gems, but it can be altered to launch multiple projectiles using the Scattershot Support Gem. The build customization in Path of Exile 2 becomes particularly impressive because players can attach Support Gems to any supporting skill, meaning that Scattershot doesn’t have to be connected to Frostbolt and could instead be applied to a different ability.

In essence, the flexibility of the passive skill tree in Path of Exile 2 is such that players aren’t confined to a single route when developing their characters. However, there’s generally an ideal pathway they should consider following for optimal results.

In Path of Exile 2, the game has become more inviting for newcomers by implementing helpful suggestions. Initially, players can essentially acquire abilities from any class in the game for their character, provided they possess the required attributes for those abilities. However, when it comes to Support Gems, Path of Exile 2 intelligently proposes suitable Support Gems for each class, although this recommendation feature can be disabled to show more options. Overall, the system provides an exceptional degree of freedom and player control that is rarely found in ARPGs. With Path of Exile 2 now being friendlier towards new players than its predecessor, it stands a greater chance than ever before to expand its player base.

Path of Exile 2’s Combat Is a Refreshing Departure From the ARPG Norm

Generally speaking, games like Diablo and Path of Exile (PoE) aim to make players feel like supreme beings battling their foes. In essence, the original PoE granted players the ability to obliterate enemies with minimal thought if they structured their character effectively. However, Path of Exile 2 (PoE2) stands apart by pushing players towards a strategic combat style rather than relying on brute force. Unlike its predecessor’s chaotic combat, PoE2 encourages a more calculated, patient, and tactical approach to battles, similar to what you’d find in Soulslike games.

When it comes to games similar to Souls, Path of Exile 2 comes incredibly close without officially being categorized as such, due to its high level of difficulty. This toughness forces players to be deliberate with each move they make and stay alert at all times. In the original game, I occasionally found myself mindlessly clearing areas, oblivious to my surroundings, until I’d come to and couldn’t recall the path I took. However, such an approach won’t lead to success in Path of Exile 2, as it demands a heightened level of focus that’s more common in the action RPG genre than what players typically expect.

In the game ‘Path of Exile 2’, there aren’t many respawn points distributed across each region. If a player gets defeated, they are teleported back to the last point they discovered. This frequently means I get transported to the opposite side of the map after I’ve spent nearly 30 minutes battling through waves of adversaries during my gameplay. What makes this challenging is that in ‘Path of Exile 2’, enemies regenerate instantly upon a player’s demise, forcing you to fight them again to continue your progress. Additionally, it’s tough to evade enemies in this game, as they can quickly surround and immobilize you, leaving no alternative but to battle through them once more.

As a player, I can attest that neglecting to gather loot or resources before meeting my in-game demise means those items vanish, making each moment of carelessness potentially costly. This mechanism adds an extra layer of tension and urgency to the gameplay experience.

Even though Path of Exile 2 presents a formidable challenge, it’s precisely this aspect that makes the experience incredibly rewarding. Just as the triumph of vanquishing a boss in a Soulslike game brings an exhilarating sense of accomplishment, the difficulty level in Path of Exile 2 offers the same satisfaction to players who persist despite multiple failures. What every player of Path of Exile 2 should bear in mind at the end of the day is that no challenge is insurmountable, and the sweet taste of victory makes every bit of hard work worthwhile.

Path of Exile 2’s Boss Fights Never Grow Stale

As a gamer diving into the world of Path of Exile 2, I can’t help but marvel at the thrilling heart of its challenges – the epic boss fights. These encounters never seem repetitive because of their intricate mechanics and distinct personalities. Each boss in this game is unique, with its own skill set and role within the game’s narrative. During my journey, I’ve come across numerous bosses that left me puzzled after several failed attempts, due to not fully understanding their mechanics. This simply underscores each boss’s individuality, reminding us to treat every encounter as a serious test of our gaming skills and strategies.

In my opinion, I find the boss battles in Path of Exile 2 intriguing because they emphasize dialogue and audio cues over visual ones. For instance, several bosses will actually announce their attacks before performing them, which makes it feel like they’re characters from an anime. This not only adds a thrilling element when they declare their attacks, but it also serves as a creative method to educate players about the specific mechanics for each battle and to provide them with a distinctive way of predicting what’s coming next.

In Path of Exile 2’s Wraeclast, there are numerous optional boss battles scattered around, which players might stumble upon even before their character is sufficiently powerful to offer a fair fight. Interestingly, the approach to these boss fights in this game often emphasizes player skill over character build. However, it’s worth noting that you can always revisit these tougher battles at a later stage, using better equipment and weapons to overcome them with ease compared to your initial encounter.

Path of Exile 2’s Visuals Are Incredibly Detailed and Immersive

As a gamer, I can’t help but be captivated by the gripping gameplay of Path of Exile 2. Yet, what truly sets it apart from other Action Role-Playing Games like Diablo 4 is its visually stunning and incredibly immersive graphics. The level of realism in these visuals is hardly ever seen in this genre; they’re so detailed that even the most hardened gamers might feel queasy at the sight of some of the game’s grisly images. These visuals perfectly complement the ominous tone of Path of Exile 2, making every journey through Wraeclast feel isolating and daunting, as if I’m just a small figure in a vast, unforgiving world.

In “Path of Exile 2”, the visuals don’t merely complement the world design and atmosphere; they elevate the fear factor of each boss encounter as well. Each boss in “Path of Exile 2” is not only intimidating to fight, but their ominous appearance makes them terrifying just to behold. Some boss introductions were so intense that I found myself bracing for an early demise, even before the battle had begun. It’s clear that this is one area where Action Role-Playing Games (ARPGs) need to excel, and “Path of Exile 2” certainly doesn’t disappoint – it seems to illuminate the very arena in which it shines.

Path of Exile 2’s Endgame Is Going to Keep Players Busy for a Long Time

Path of Exile 2’s Campaign Is Its Story-Driven Path to the Endgame

As a dedicated fan, I must share my insights about Path of Exile 2. While the main objective of its development has been to deliver an endgame that would keep us engrossed for countless hours, it’s essential to traverse through its campaign before reaching that endgame content. Unlike the original game, however, the campaign in Path of Exile 2 is more story-focused. However, a significant portion of this narrative and lore is uncovered by deliberately engaging in extended conversations with the game’s diverse non-player characters. Reflecting on Path of Exile 2’s potential as an isometric Soulslike, this method of storytelling and lore revelation feels fitting.

In a chilling and intense opening sequence, Path of Exile 2 lays the groundwork for its captivating story. Although further cinematics are absent throughout the game’s narrative progression, the overall experience remains cinematic in nature. I invested approximately 40 hours exploring what is currently accessible in the early access campaign of Path of Exile 2, which required me to traverse the first three out of six acts twice. The second journey was more challenging because it was set on Cruel difficulty, but by my second run through the initial three acts, I had grown proficient with my Sorceress and she possessed enough power that even the tougher setting still felt manageable.

In the beginning of its early access phase, Path of Exile 2 will initially offer just three acts in its campaign, with an additional three acts to be added later. Additionally, it includes the Cruel difficulty level, meaning that players must replay the first three acts once they’ve been completed to reach the endgame.

Path of Exile 2’s Endgame Is the Best Kind of Overwhelming

Despite investing 50 hours into Path of Exile 2, I barely touched the vastness of its endgame content. The endgame spanned approximately 10 hours for me, and I can easily see myself pouring hundreds more into it. With seven distinct systems shaping the game’s endgame, I was fortunate to explore merely a fraction of them. Describing each system in detail would require extensive time, but the sheer amount of content speaks volumes about how engrossing this game can be.

One reason I didn’t delve deeply into the endgame of “Path of Exile 2” is that my character won’t be carried over when it officially launches. Personally, I wanted to preserve the experience for its official early access release. Despite only spending about 10 hours on the endgame content, it has convinced me that I’d want to explore much more once the game enters early access. The abundance of content in “Path of Exile 2″‘s endgame is truly impressive, and it’s a good kind of overwhelming because it doesn’t dictate a specific path for players. Instead, it offers various choices, and there’s no penalty for choosing one route over another.

Path of Exile 2 Is Not Without Its Issues in Early Access

It might not be accurate to criticize Path of Exile 2 for its problems during the early access stage because they’re not severe enough for widespread complaints. Nevertheless, it’s hard to ignore the existing issues that may, and hopefully will, be resolved as Path of Exile 2 continues in its early access phase. In other words, despite being one of the most polished games I’ve encountered during early access, there are still some kinks that need to be worked out in Path of Exile 2.

During the early access phase, I can’t predict if others might encounter the same problem, but in the demo I played, an update caused all the Skill and Support Gems I had previously unlocked to vanish. This seems to be related to Grinding Gear Games modifying my character class skills, although it was still disappointing. At that time, my Sorceress was almost Level 40, which meant I faced significantly stronger enemies without the lost gems. However, after a few hours of continued gameplay, I managed to regain everything that had been taken away.

There’s a possibility that issues might arise for others when updates are released for Path of Exile 2 during early access. Although this is expected as the game mechanics undergo refinement and polishing, I can foresee it potentially driving some players away from the game entirely if these problems persist.

One area where I see room for improvement in “Path of Exile 2” is the balance between its expansive open areas and the activities within them. While the vastness of these spaces offers exciting exploration opportunities and rewards, they can sometimes feel sparsely populated because there aren’t always many events or interactions to discover. For instance, it’s not uncommon for an area to take more than an hour to fully explore, but with few events to break up the journey, these spaces can start to feel empty. However, I must add that combat in “Path of Exile 2” is frequent and intense, ensuring there’s rarely a moment’s peace during exploration, as the enemy encounters keep players on their toes due to the high mob density.

Despite some unspecified matters, the sheer polish of Path of Exile 2 makes me extremely optimistic about its future potential. In its early access stage alone, it’s clear that it stands among the top Action Role-Playing Games (ARPGs) I’ve ever experienced, thanks to its unique player power, engaging visuals, rewarding combat, immersive exploration and boss fights, and vast, unrestricted endgame. It’s challenging not to draw comparisons between Path of Exile 2 and other popular ARPGs like Diablo 4, but it would be unfair not to acknowledge that Path of Exile 2 holds a strong contender status against the current heavyweights in the genre.
