Path of Exile 2: How To Unlock & Use Salvage Bench

As a seasoned veteran of the Path of Exile universe, I must say that the introduction of the Salvage System in PoE 2 has been nothing short of a game-changer for me! Coming from the fast-paced, action-packed combat and progression of PoE 1, the slower, more methodical approach in PoE 2 has provided a refreshing challenge.

In Path of Exile 2, there are numerous changes compared to the original game, one notable distinction being a more deliberate pace for combat and progression. Another significant alteration lies in the crafting system, with new mechanisms such as the PoE 2 Salvage feature introduced.

In the sequel to “Path of Exile,” known as “Path of Exile 2,” some pieces of equipment can be broken down for upgrade materials, called “Currencies.” However, not all items can be salvaged in “PoE 2, ” and the ability to do so must first be unlocked as part of the main storyline before players can utilize the Salvage system at the “PoE 2” Salvage Workstation.

In the game Path of Exile 2, Salvage is one of the methods players can use to discard outdated equipment. They can sell equipment for gold, break down Magic and Rare items into Currency components, and specifically salvage certain types of gear to receive Artificer’s Shards and various currencies used for quality enhancement.

In Path of Exile 2, not every piece of gear can be salvaged. The only items that can be salvaged are those with Rune Sockets or those with Quality. Items with sockets will provide Artificer’s Shards upon salvage, while salvaging quality items grants one of the three Quality Currencies: Blacksmith’s Whetstone, Artificer’s Whetstone, or Armorer’s Scrap, depending on the type of item that was salvaged.

  • You can see whether a piece of gear has Rune Sockets in Path of Exile 2 by hovering over it in your Inventory, or by checking for a white dot next to the names of items on the ground. If it has a white dot, that piece of gear has one Rune Socket, and if it has two dots, it has two Rune Sockets.
  • You must Identify unidentified Gear to find out whether it has Quality or not. In your Inventory, the Quality bonus should appear beneath the item’s name, if it has the bonus.

In Path of Exile 2, normal items yield the same materials when salvaged as a rare item. So, if you have a loot filter activated, remember to make an exception for normal equipment with sockets or quality. When salvaging, players will receive 1 Artificer’s Shard for gear containing 1 Rune Socket, and 2 Artificer’s Shards for gear with 2 Rune Sockets.

Collecting enough Artificer’s Shards (10 in total) will reward you with an Artificer’s Orb. An Artificer’s Orb introduces a Runic Socket into your equipment, enabling you to insert Runes and enhance the gear with additional damage and defensive attributes. Most armor and weapons can have only one Runic Socket at a time, but exceptions are two-handed weapons and chest armor, which can accommodate up to two Runic Sockets each.

When you Salvage gear with Quality, you will build up associated Quality Currency shards. All Upgrade materials that grant Quality will all add 4% Quality, up to a max of 20% Quality.

How To Unlock The Path of Exile 2 Salvage Bench

To begin salvaging equipment, players in “Path of Exile 2” need to first make the Salvage Station available in town. The Salvage Station is not accessible at the beginning, and you’ll have to advance a reasonable distance into Act 1 before it can be unlocked.

To access the Salvage system, keep progressing through Act 1, eventually receiving the mission titled ‘Finding The Forge’ from Renly. Following his guidance, journey to the dilapidated Ogham Village to retrieve Renly’s blacksmithing equipment.

As you advance through the primary narrative of Path of Exile 2, you’ll come across the locale known as Ogham Village. This is situated near Ogham Manor, where you pursue the Count. Keep in mind that Ogham Village is a challenging area for characters at Level 13 monsters, so make sure your character has reached this level before venturing into it.

This quest will not be offered until you have completed the quest ‘Secrets In The Dark’.

In Path of Exile 2, even though maps are created at random, there are distinct landmarks to help you find Renly’s Tools. As you traverse this region that resembles farmlands and fields, keep an eye out for a cluster of buildings that appear to have been destroyed or razed. You will likely find a Checkpoint just outside the vicinity of these structures.

If you’re having difficulty locating Renly’s Tools in Path of Exile 2, it would be helpful to clear the fog of war that is often found near the edges of the map. The razed village where the tools might appear typically appears within the borders of the map itself, not as an extension on the edge.

In some cases, players discover that it often appears in the northeastern and southeastern parts of the zone, or on the other side of the Executioner boss’s location.

After reaching the Checkpoint, proceed to the dilapidated village, grab Renly’s Tools, then create a Portal to return to town. Return the tools to Renly, finish the quest, and you’ll gain access to the Salvage Bench. Initially, it will be located opposite Renly in Act 1, and it will appear in every main area along with other merchants for the remainder of the game.
